BATHROOM
The lighting in the previous space was sparse, so the designer incorporated a
layered plan into the new design that consists of natural light, recessed fixtures
in the ceiling for standard illumination, undercabinet lighting for prep work
and pendants for what Bishop calls the " jewelry " of the kitchen.
She wanted the island to be the showstopper in the new kitchen because
it is the first thing you see when you walk into the room, so she said it needs
to hold your attention.
" The large L-shape design built with a furniture kick in a deep, dramatic
color topped with Caesarstone quartz and styled with some dapper bar stools
in a lux fabric achieves this, " she added.
MEETING PRIMARY GOALS IN A PRIMARY BATH
Bishop's clients wanted a " master wing " in their home, so she borrowed space
from a guest bedroom to create this oasis, which includes a master bedroom,
walk-in closet and a high-tech ensuite with a huge shower. The husband
was passionate about the technology, which was reflected in a smart heated
flooring system; a 24-in. rain showerhead; and a toilet with a heated seat,
bidet and adjustable air drying.
" The wife's only request was to incorporate vessel sinks with unique curved
styling, which reminded her of her hotel bathroom from their recent trip to
Indonesia, " said the designer.
The double vanity has 2-in. gables on either end that go to the ground and
look like legs - giving it a modern farmhouse look. It is constructed of American
walnut in a clear coat, and it was not bookmatched so as to add additional
contrast in the primarily white and gray bathroom. A large mirror balances the
weight of the vanity, and its black frame matches the frames of the windows.
CLEARING PROJECT HURDLES
Adding recessed lighting to the original tongue-and-groove ceiling was
definitely a challenge in the kitchen. Bishop and her team had to rip up

the floor above it for the installation, but this was
necessary to replace the unsightly and inefficient
track lighting. She said an alternative was to make
holes in the ceiling to accommodate the new recessed
lighting and its wiring, but that would have
ruined the original ceiling.
She also had to install the island cabinets around
the two support posts, as well as work around the
perimeter cabinets that remained from the original
kitchen. One post was built around the void
cabinet, and at one end of the island, the team
butted the cabinets beside the post and templated
the countertop around it so it appears integrated.
The cabinets come up to just under the beams
rather than going all the way to the ceiling.
Although she said cladding the posts and
beams and painting them white would not have
offered the necessary contrast in the kitchen,
Bishop admitted that sanding them down and
staining them was a lot of work that added to the
budget and schedule.
" The clients were not pleased with the delays,
but they agreed that this was the best course of
action, " she added.
Designers are often tasked with balancing the
tastes and styles among significant others, as well
as making sure any updates are made while taking
the home's original architecture into account.
Bishop did this perfectly throughout this project
and overcame the challenges along the way.

