OUTDOOR LIVING
Fashioning an Exterior Oasis
AFTER COMPLETING SEVERAL indoor renovations,
including a " pool room " for a client, Christopher
Grubb of Beverly Hills, Calif.-based Arch-Interiors
Design Group was asked to create an entire
outdoor experience in a space that was otherwise not
getting much use. For this project, his client wanted
an all-encompassing retreat with seating, conversation
and dining areas; a saltwater pool, hot tub and
fi re pit; and an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen.
And although the project was completed before
the COVID-19 pandemic, this exterior area
has served as the homeowner's work-from-home
space while his regular offi ce is still closed. He has
used the dining table for a makeshift desk and the
kitchen bar as a stand-up desk when he grows tired
of sitting. A bathroom in the multi-purpose garage
space is accessible to guests outside, so no one actually
has to go inside the house if it's not necessary.

PERFECTING THE NEW OUTDOOR SPACE
Th e aquatic-colored awnings, which had already been in place, were the
jumping-off point for the rest of the elements in this project. As the client
loved those sea-inspired shades, Grubb chose iridescent glass tiles that echo
the same tones for the hot tub, fi re pit and outdoor shower areas. He chose
neutral-hued furniture fabrics that can be easily changed out in the future or
that can be accessorized with more colorful options.
Th is outdoor oasis is an extension of the pool room with some of the same
color palette, but it is not necessarily an extension of the home's overall design.
" We wanted it to be an entirely diff erent experience out here, " said Grubb.
" As if you were traveling to a resort. "
For the fully functional outdoor kitchen, which the designer admits only
has room for a " one-man show " in the actual prep area, he included a grill,
refrigerator, sink, faucet with hot and cold water and some storage. Another
member of the team suggested a beverage holder to save on counterspace,
and LED lights provide a warm glow over the kitchen at night.
