SAVING AND SPLURGING
The designer starts the budget conversation with
her client during the first meeting. If she feels
the budget is reasonable, she does her best to stay
within that figure.
" I want to start each project with our thumb on
the pulse of the money, " she said. " No matter how
much they have or they want to spend, this shows
respect to our client. When we shop with them, we
gather best and better options, so we can splurge
on the things they love and save where it doesn't
affect the design or the clients' desires. "
As the homeowners are avid cooks, it was important
to them to have a professional rangetop,
and the costs of that were balanced with more
cost-effective oven and refrigerator choices. Robinson
says it is not always necessary to choose appliances
from the same brand. When her clients
want double ovens, she suggests doing a rangetop
with an apron rather than installing the slide-in
unit as well. This saves money and allows her to
include drawers under the rangetop for storage.
Although the subway tile goes all the way up
one wall, it was not as pricey as some other choices,
and the light fixtures were a great deal. She spent
the extra $100 for the power grout with the sealant
already mixed in because white grout can be
extremely difficult to clean.
The project didn't skimp on cabinetry, which
includes full-extension and soft-close doors and
drawers and a pegboard system in the drawers
for organization. Instead of all-new flooring, the
builder was able to lace in hardwood to match
the existing where the cabinetry footprint had
changed and then only refinish the kitchen and
not the entire first floor, stopping at the thresholds.
As far as lessons learned, Robinson said that
during construction there was a minor hiccup with
the electrical system on this job, but the builder
was able to relocate the lights. Now the firm has a
disclaimer that someone needs to be on site when
the rough-in electrical is scheduled so they can
give their advice with actuals. But the packaged
pricing method ensured that both client and designer
were equally happy with the whole process
and especially the final outcome.
