She got creative and borrowed some space from
the elevated living room off the fi rst fl oor - a room
the project otherwise did not touch, as it was situated
beyond the central staircase and did not need
to relate to the rooms that were visible from the
kitchen. Th e door to the powder room is cleverly
hidden on the staircase landing, which situates
it in the center of the home, and luckily running
plumbing there did not present a problem.
CHALLENGE #3 - LEVELING UP
Th roughout the renovated downstairs areas, Ossler
specifi ed pre-fi nished, solid hardwood fl ooring.
But in this older home, the surface had to be
leveled.
" It was obvious that the fl oors were uneven, "
she said. " Each room felt patched together. We
removed probably three or four diff erent fl ooring
materials. "
Marvista's in-house carpenter team led by production
manager Paul Hellested identifi ed the
existing elevation of the fl oor by measuring its
height at 12-in. increments to determine where
and how thick wood shims needed to be. The
original hardwood had to act as the subfl oor in
some locations, so it was left in place.
" The work was meticulous, but it made a
huge diff erence in the end, especially since the
team was joining so many rooms together, " said
Hellested. " Th e homeowners felt the strength of
the fl oor and were glad we had done it. "
Even with the success of the project, Ossler
learned that as the designer, she usually knows
best. She had specifi ed the cabinetry in a taupe
color, but the client backed out just before the
order was placed and asked for white - a request
the designer honored. Afterward, the client stated
taupe would have been the better choice.
