The pandemic forced designers to be resourceful in their practices. This session highlighted three
alternative approaches to doing business and turning a profit. Participants included LuAnn Nigara,
host of " A Well-Designed Business " podcast, speaker and author; Breegan Jane, designer, entrepreneur
and lifestyle expert; Claire Jefford, CID, business coach and speaker, Claire Jefford Inc.; and
Jenna Gaidusek, founder and CEO of eDesign Tribe.

form of communication, with designers producing
high-quality renderings, virtual concept
boards and online presentations. Without offering
product procurement, fees need to be
carefully calculated. A burgeoning client category
is builders of new homes. E-designers can

COMMERCIAL MEETS RESIDENTIAL AND WORK MEETS LIVING
This session took a big-picture look at the shifting directions for residential design as impacted by
demographic, social and economic forces. Participants included Mollie Carmichael, principal, Zonda;
Joanna Saltz, editorial director, Delish & House Beautiful; Steve Basten, vice president, John Burns
Real Estate Consulting; and Julie Schuster, principal and lead designer, Julie Schuster Design.

ADUs and additions can accommodate remote
workers, multi-generational households
or aging-in-place persons. Second homes are
being used more as primary residences (not
vacation retreats), which impacts where designers

design of their home, often challenging conventional
wisdom or mainstream trends.
3. Wellness Is Multidimensional. More than
physical fitness, the concept extends to mental
health and is manifest in diverse ways. Organized

are safe and private places for socializing.
4. Optimal Functionality Is a Focus. Home
is a functional haven, not a showplace or
waystation.
It can be hard to come up with new
ideas for content. Always showcase
your expertise; nothing is too insignificant
for a 15-second TikTok video.
Think about how trends translate
into content relevant to your brand.
Try serializing topics over time or
create list-based content (five bathroom
storage tips, 10 backsplash
ideas, seven essential kitchen design
elements).
Don't expect your posts to go viral right
away. Culture interest in them by putting
yourself in the audience's minds;
remember, the purpose of social media
is to fulfill the needs of your community.
Be consistent in the length and
focus of your posts. Post participatory
items such as polls and questions, share
tips and highlight teaching moments
in your own work.
Monetizing social media can take several
forms for a design firm. Some use
it to pitch themselves to brands. Others
look to convert viewers to clients. Still
others use it as a tool to drive traffic to
their website and increase their e-commerce.
Establish your business goals
before launching a social campaign.
