A look at the strategic investments kitchen and bath brands have made
in their environmental campaigns

HILE KITCHEN AND BATH DESIGNERS can
easily specify EnergyStar-rated appliances
and LEED-eligible materials and
technologies to keep their projects ecofriendly,
for a manufacturer to commit
to a progressive environmental program
is a matter of scale as well as science. It requires
an integrated approach that touches all aspects
of the business, from the initial product concept,
through production and use, to disposal.
Here are snapshots of six kitchen and bath
brands that walk the talk of sustainability in both
their products and their practices.
APPLIANCES: BEKO
Beko is a U.S. subsidiary of Arçelik, a global
manufacturer that has been widely recognized
as one of the most sustainable appliance makers
in the world.
Named a Dow Jones Sustainability Index
(DJSI) " Industry Leader " in the Durable Home
Appliances category, Arçelik achieved the highest
score out of the 20 companies assessed. It is
the fi fth year in a row the business has charted
in the DJSI.
" Sustainability drives the company, technology
and R&D eff orts at Beko because it is committed
to being the defi nitive health and wellness
brand in the appliance industry, " said Zach Elkin,
president of Beko Home Appliances.
Establishing stretch goals is one way the brand
keeps on track with its objectives. By early 2021,
Beko, in alliance with Arçelik, had met several key
sustainability goals set in 2016 (compared to the
base year of 2012) that were tied to its production
processes. Th ese include:
 A 45% reduction in average energy consumption
for each manufactured product
 A 52% reduction in average water withdrawal
