air quality, product resource management, process resource management,
environmental stewardship and community relations. The company has a
unique way of recycling its wood waste: 99.9% is shaved down and transformed
into livestock bedding, minimizing waste output and supporting
the local farming community.
SANITARY WARE: KOHLER
Kohler's internal WasteLAB enterprise looks to nature as a model for sustainable
processes. Through nature's cycles of growth and decay, waste simply
doesn't exist. The WasteLAB applies such an approach in its manufacturing
process, using by-products from Kohler's production of vitreous china goods
- such as landfill-bound pottery shards, waste glaze and enamel powder,
wastewater sludge and cast-iron slag - to design and produce new products.
This is a step toward building a sustainable circular economy, one in which
waste streams are reused, reconsidered and repurposed to create beautiful,
thoughtful products. From 2019 through 2021, sales of WasteLAB tile have
diverted more than 54,000 pounds of waste from landfills, advancing the
company's commitment to achieving net-zero waste to landfill by 2035.
When developing the Abstra Collection of tiles, the WasteLAB team
decided to take waste conversion one step further, exploring a new avenue
in their sustainability efforts. They leveraged Kohler pottery's wastewater
stream for the tile body. Consisting primarily of pottery waste clay and
glaze, the material is dewatered and processed into a useable base material.

Innovation for Good & Sustainability at Kohler. " The WasteLAB is
helping us deliver on our commitment to a better planet in that we are
mitigating waste to landfill. "
