was able to add more cabinet
storage, a small sink, a counter,
a clothes rod and a space for
the laundry basket.
CRAFTING A PRACTICAL SOLUTION
Next to the kitchen, the 52-sq.-ft. laundry room had its own layout problems.
It contained four doors plus a window, which limited the workspace and
storage. While the homeowners wanted to keep the home's original built-in
ironing board, they sought a modern approach that made more efficient use
of the room.
According to the designer, the laundry room was a real puzzle. To solve
that puzzle, she removed the two small storage cabinets in the room, closed
three of the doors and made the entry door from the hallway slightly smaller
than the original opening.
" By doing this, I was able to design custom cabinetry that contains a small
sink, lots of storage for all their cleaning supplies, a counter, a small rod to
hang dry items and space for their laundry basket, " said Gal.
Instead of keeping the original ironing board, she created space on the
wall opposite the cabinets to hang a new ironing board, iron and brooms
and mops. To add a bit of flair to the laundry room that also works with the
home's age, Gal specified black-and-white hexagonal ceramic tile for the
flooring, a classic choice used from the 1920s to 1950s. To make the space
even more fun, she chose a seafoam green subway tile for the walls above the
countertops and a cool, soothing, green-printed wallpaper for the other walls.
" While wallpaper costs more than paint, it's not a huge splurge in a small
space and adds a big punch of style, " said Gal. " I wanted to make the laundry
room a nice space to perform a task that isn't glamorous. "
Although the price was surprising for the clients, it all worked out. At the
final reveal, the designer said they were quite happy with the results.
