BUILD YOUR TEAM
Since technology is of paramount importance to millennials, you'll need to partner with someone
who knows the ins and outs of today's electronic systems. As one designer put it: " I'm the creative
leader, but technology is not a do-it-yourself scenario. "
Enter the technology integrator, an expert in technology products, networks, security and infrastructure
requirements. The integrator should be the first " trade specialist " hired for your team, followed by
the carpenter, electrician and plumber. This way, the integrator can create detailed design and engineering
plans that align the specialists and/or trades around the client's desired outcome. The details
can also be added to the budget up front so that the total costs submitted to the client before the work
starts reflect the technology integration.
TIPS ON FINDING AN INTEGRATOR
Go to NKBA's Home Technology Association's (HTA) partner page (NKBA.org/insights/findan-integrator/)
to find certified integrators in your local area.
Look up local showrooms that highlight technology, contact them to see if they have integrators
on staff (make sure to check references).
If you can't find a local integrator, look outside your area since most can support you remotely.
When you settle on someone you feel you can work with, experts say you should " try before you
buy. " That is, don't first collaborate on a client's project. Test them out on your showroom or your own
home to see if their skillset and personality meet your expectations. Also, make sure they have the same
passion for the client experience. You want to ensure the final client experience is easy and intuitive
and that they are available to troubleshoot when necessary.
Most important, when you decide to bring in the integrator, make sure everyone is clear on the roles
and responsibilities as well as the chain of command. Establish rules as to who is the lead communicator
facilitating conversations with the client: The designer leads but pulls the integrator in to back them up.
