would look like " a big wedding hall, " said Edler. Th rough renderings in
eDesign Tribe, she showed them how she would create specifi c zones even
in an open space, using light to demarcate them.
THE WALLS CAME DOWN
Edler had the entry foyer walls and archways removed, along with the major
wall separating the kitchen and dining room and the stub walls delineating
the living room. Luckily, no wall was load bearing, and the change doubled
the size of the kitchen from about 500 to 1,000 square feet.
To recover a bit of dining space, the designer created a bench with a table
and chairs in front of the previously little-used bay window overlooking
the fi elds outside. She remodeled the fi replace in the living room, bringing
a seamless design to the now open-concept kitchen.
To meet her goal of defi ning zones through lighting, Edler changed two
tall windows gained from the previous dining room to counter height, and
they sit along what is now the range wall. She added a matching window
above the sink, bringing a cohesive look to the repurposed space.
RUSTIC & MODERN IN THE COUNTRY
With plenty of room to work with, Edler infused the kitchen with an upto-date
farmhouse look with clean lines, white cabinets and linear subway
tile paired with a barn door and open wood shelves.
Th e island perfectly encapsulates this design idea with its luxe-look white
quartz waterfall combined with rustic alder cabinets in a rich, dark stain.
Th e clients enjoy cooking, so Edler chose high-end appliances that
work for a baker and a chef. Extra storage was high on their list, and she
took this to the max with custom cabinets for cookie sheets, a full pantry
for hiding small appliances and baking needs behind the barn door and a
custom paper towel drawer.
When the designer presented the idea of a coff ee bar, her clients were
not interested. She reminded her clients about zones of the kitchen and
how various spaces could be used, for example, in the coff ee area, they could
display a bit of décor they wanted to incorporate.
" Th ey didn't see the need for the bar area, " she said. " Th ey challenged me on
it. Th ey don't entertain a lot, so it's just the two of them. But they love coff ee. "
Another lifestyle change was brought on by the kitchen thanks to the
striking island, which is visible from the front entrance. Before the renovation,
the clients only used the back entrance, even for visitors. Now, not
only do they welcome guests through the front door, but they have also
asked the designer to redo their front porch.
Although the project was completed during the pandemic, supply chain
delays did not slow it down. Edler had learned to order strategically.
" Product selection was a big piece of the lack of delays, " she said. " I was
specifying products I knew we wouldn't have an issue with. "


beverage cooler and display
shelves, it has become the
homeowners' go-to area for
entertaining.
