Second, he says he prioritizes understanding
how the indoor and outdoor kitchens are going
to work together. Do we need only minimal refrigeration
outdoors because the indoor kitchen
is just a few steps away? Do we want a dishwasher
outdoors because the two kitchens are far enough
apart that we want to clean up outside?
" Finally, I want to make the kitchen easy to live
with and a joy to use, " said Faulk. " This comes
down to material selection and design for how the
functional zones relate to each other for key workflows:
prepping, cooking, serving and cleanup. "

" As more homeowners dedicate larger footprints and budgets to these
spaces, we've focused on finding gaps in the market, " said Slater. " For
example, some homeowners have started to show interest in bolder color
choices, which opened the door for more design-forward, vibrant products
and led us to expand our powder-coat finishes with new hues. "
With metal elements in outdoor kitchens, material integrity is a prime
concern. For coastal locations, look for cabinets and appliances that are
fabricated from 316 grade stainless steel. It is a marine-grade material that is
resistant to salt corrosion. Durable and with an attractive finish, 304 grade is
widely used for high-quality grills. Avoid 430 grade stainless, as it will show
effects of rust after a few seasons outdoors.
Kitchen components of aluminum are also corrosion resistant. Because
they are light in weight, they are a popular choice for deck-top designs.
Cabinets constructed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) offer a different
look.
" The material mimics current trends in indoor cabinetry, creating a
warm and welcoming outdoor environment, " said John Hollis, director
of manufacturing at Endura. The UV-resistant material can be embossed
and routed, giving the drawer and door fronts an appealing texture and
touch, and edge profiles can add further character to the design. HDPE
cabinet components are typically through-color, so any surface scratches
are minimized. At the end of their lifespan, HDPE units can be recycled.
OUTDOOR SHOWERS
Kitchens aren't the only backyard amenity homeowners are adding to their
property. Permanent outdoor showers also enhance the richness of plein
air living. Just as with their indoor counterparts, options abound: Foot
washes, hand showers and rainheads are available in both wall-mounted
and freestanding models.
Wall-mounted showers tie into plumbing that runs through the supporting
wall. They can also be attached to purpose-built walls in locations
that are remote from the house. In these situations, it is necessary to run
additional plumbing underground to reduce the possibility of freezing or
other damage to the line.
Outdoor showers aren't limited to cold water. In many cases, a hot water
pipe can be run from the existing household supply to an outside connection.
Alternatively, some models can be hooked up to a propane tank, and
there are solar-powered outdoor showers on the market, as well.

