Mood Boosting
AFTER ABOUT two decades in their suburban
Milwaukee home, a couple decided they had
lived long enough with their outdated bathroom.
Although it would benefi t from a style refresh,
the existing traditional look of the space was in
keeping with the home. Instead, it was the tightness
caused by the awkward angles of the walls,
fi xtures and ceiling that pushed them to renovate.
Th e homeowners hired Carmel Builders, now
Alair Milwaukee, to give them a more functional
layout and a brighter style that still leaned traditional.
By minimizing fi xtures, moving the door
and borrowing space from the bedroom, the design
team created a luxury bathroom that is both
sleek and traditional despite not being able to
change the variety of ceiling twists and turrns.
" Th e bathroom had a lot of goofy angles, " said
Brooke Nelson, design project manager, Alair
Milwaukee. " Th e vanities were on an angled wall
that ran into the tub. It was not functional at all. "

A bathroom without windows but too many
angles receives a spatial and visual update
OUT WITH THE OLD
The first structural change was to extend the
bathroom by shifting one wall a foot into the
bedroom. Next, the bathroom door was moved to
one of the impractical angled walls. Th at allowed
the design team to close in the wall where the
door had been, creating a long, straight surface
for the new double vanity.
Inside the bathroom, two items had to go - a
small linen closet and the bathtub. In their place,
a much larger shower was added. It has a custom
glass surround, making it appear even more spacious,
and there was room to include a long bench.
But the updates could not solve every issue.
" Th e angles over the toilet were a challenge, "
said Nelson. " We couldn't raise the ceiling because
that is the existing roof. "
Th e new toilet was installed in the same location
as the previous one - it was the only fi xture
that could fi t beneath the low ceiling there.

designers at Alair Milwaukee
paired a white vanity with
marble-look tile. Fixtures
and hardware in a modern
brass fi nish honor the more
traditional look the clients
like, as do the recessed
panel drawers of the fl oating
cabinet. The sink faucets
were the clients' fi rst pick
for their new bathroom,
and the design was built
around them. The clients
added wallpaper and ceiling
decoration after the project
was complete.
