Homing Instincts
This designer finds purpose in
sourcing finely crafted products
with an aesthetic heritage
A PAIR OF LIFE EXPERIENCES shaped the design philosophy of Julia
Miller, creative director of Minneapolis-based Yond Interiors. As a
former social worker, she knows the value of a home space that really
works for the persons living in it. And having lived abroad and created
homes in several countries over the years, she learned adaptability and
appreciation of what local environments have to off er.
Combined, these two factors have infl uenced her choice of design
elements. Miller consciously seeks to specify products that help create
a retreat and a place of rest, while incorporating support for makers in
the community. Authentic and sustainable materials are integral to
her work.
" While we strive for uniqueness, we look for items that will last, "
said Miller. " We also honor and believe in true craftsmanship and
love having the opportunity to source from our never-ending well of
talented craftspeople. "

1. Th e Applique Cylindrique Longue wall light from Nemo
Lighting is great for a kitchen or bath. It could work perfectly over a set of
shelves or over a mirror in the bathroom. Designed by Charlotte Perriand,
we love the vintage nod and the little hint of blue.
2. From deVOL, this Aged-Brass Hanging Rail is all our favorite
things - interest and age! Perfect for a kitchen, it's available with S-hooks.

3.Tess Tile is our favorite Minneapolis tile maker. Th eir handmade tiles
are really special and add so much nuance to a surface. We are particularly
drawn to the mottled nature of their Snake Creek glaze.
4. We strongly prefer fi nishes that patina and show their age. Th is Large
Oval Cupboard Latch from Rejuvenation hits the style points,
and the unlacquered brass fi nish will ripen wonderfully over time.
5. Everyone at the studio loves kilim rugs for their fl exibility and colors;
they pair well with everything. A fl atweave made of pure wool, the San
Simeon Stripe from Safavieh exudes a rustic charm.
6. Supporting local makers and creatives like the talented craftspeople at
Rovan Furniture is so important to us. I can see their Side Table in
Ebonized Ash working as a spot on which to rest a book or wine glass
in the bath.
