Rising Tide
A new hotel by Oculus Inc. vitalizes a quintessential Oregon coast destination

S
easide, a quintessential beach getaway in northwest Oregon, mixes
a scenic Pacific Ocean backdrop with the old-fashioned charms of a
sprawling 1920s promenade and kitschy carousel.
For the 64-room SaltLine Hotel, which opened here last year as a more
upscale addition to the Seaside Lodging portfolio, James Staicoff, national
director of hospitality at Oculus Inc. and director of the firm's Portland, Oregon
office, aimed " for a casual, effortless aesthetic that evoked the timeless
experience of relaxing at a beach house. Vacationing at the coast is an honored
Oregon tradition, and we wanted to provide that sense of homecoming even for
the first-time hotel guest. "
A visitor's initial encounter with SaltLine is indeed welcoming. Gracing
one side of the building is a bright, four-story aquamarine and yellow mural
conceived of by Portland-based Meagan Geer Designs. Another cheerful
chromatic composition courtesy of Geer's studio dominates the indoor
saltwater pool area and references the oceanic shapes and hues that are found
throughout the hotel.
Such appreciation for SaltLine's surroundings steers Staicoff's informal
approach to the design, ultimately " offering a fresh voice and original point of
view in a historic Pacific Northwest community, " as he puts it. For example, it
manifests in guestroom carpeting emblazoned with enlarged antique patterns
that are brought to life in subtle aqueous tones. In the lobby, it is echoed
through the heavy Douglas fir columns and beams, as well as in the textured
screens crafted from the same wood, which organically carve the space into
intimate lounge and breakfast zones.
