Premier Design Studio revamps a stunning Caribbean resort

W
hen two powerful hurricanes slammed into St. Thomas one
after another in late 2017, Mother Nature forced the Ritz-Carlton
resort to look beyond its planned lobby renovation and embark
on a much bigger $100 million project. The hotel closed for two years for
architectural renovations (led by Orlando-based L2 Studios) while a team
at Dallas-based Premier Design Studio set to work rejuvenating the lobby,
guestroom, and restaurant interiors.
" We wanted to get away from the golds and terracottas that had been
around since the property opened in the '90s, " says Carla Niemann, senior vice
president, design and architecture. " So we created a much fresher palette that
draws from the blues of the seas and the soft coral of the conch shells and
layers them against a base of pale gray and ivory. "
For further inspiration, the design team researched the resort's spectacular
Caribbean surrounds and came up with a narrative that reflects its legacy
as a trading post for the surrounding islands. " Accents throughout reference
luggage and campaign chests that tie into that story, " says Niemann. Displays of
nautical knots and details that evoke compass points also nod to the significant
influence of the import and export economy on the island's development.
" Those small subtle details combined to make an overall big impact, " adds
design director Halah Ciafardini. " We retained a lot of the original architecture,
but it was amazing to see this hotel transform into a vibrant, updated luxurious
resort just by adding textures and natural elements to the spaces. "
Guestrooms feature cerused headboards that suggest paneled millwork
and are outfitted with recessed niches to display artwork depicting beach
landscapes. Live-edge desks that also function as dining tables, cane settees,
and White Ice marble flooring add custom luxury touchpoints. Bathrooms
echo those material choices and include slipper standalone tubs and ceramic
perches that suggest native garden stools. " Objects like that are some of my
