ith roots that stretch back more than 120 years, Ristorante
Giannino dal 1899, beloved by celebrities and politicians, is a
Milan institution close to Piazza della Repubblica. Now, London
diners can take a glimpse into this storied culinary heritage at Giannino Mayfair,
the trattoria's first offshoot.
London, like Milan, is " international and open-minded, " making it a prime
choice for the brand's expansion, points out Federico Spagnulo, founder and
senior partner at Spagnulo & Partners, the Milan-based architecture and design
firm also responsible for the original location's elegant overhaul in 2017.

photographs of golden-age luminaries. Open shelves that organically double as
wall partitions echo the lines of the Dutch De Stijl movement and are layered
with objects for a curated gallery feel. " We approached this project with a
strong relationship to the history and cultural meaning that the restaurant has
in Milan, " says Spagnulo, noting how many of the selected materials reflect this
context.

Set in one of the city's poshest neighborhoods, Giannino Mayfair's attention
to detail begins on arrival, an experience Spagnulo imagined as hushed but
pronounced. " We wanted to create a proper intimate entrance with a front desk
reception without disturbing the guests, " he explains. At the same time, he
didn't want it completely devoid of the restaurant's energy, ensuring there was
" a soft connection to the small bar area. "

For example, he and his team showcased wallcoverings emblazoned with
geometric motifs that reference patterns from the early 20th century, just
when Giannino founder Giannino Bindi was getting his business underway.
They also embraced brass and glass to design a collection of sconces and
cascading chandeliers that are reminiscent of the poetic sculptures by artist
Fausto Melotti, who began working in Milan in the 1920s. Even the Amazakoue
wood wainscoting, framed by polished accents crafted from yet more brass,
call to mind Milan's Villa Necchi Campiglio, the handiwork of prominent 1930s
architect Piero Portaluppi.

Beyond check-in, the earth-toned dining rooms conjure London glamour,
yet are decidedly Milanese in spirit, heightened by numerous black-and-white

Giannino Mayfair is " linked to a specific period and place, " says Spagnulo.
" The 'genius loci' is for us fundamental. "
