High Water Mark
A recent Hakkasan addition by Campbell House calls on the Aegean Sea

T
he Aegean Sea plays a starring role at the Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum,
so when an open-air outpost of the contemporary Chinese restaurant
Hakkasan debuted at the Turkish resort earlier this year, the space
naturally also centered on these clear, blue waters.
At the same time, the design team at Campbell House wanted to ensure
that the luxe, dramatic aura synonymous with the Hakkasan brand-which
has spawned locations around the globe since making its mark on London
in 2001-was on full display. Mike Lawless, project director and associate
at the firm's New York studio, notes that the biggest challenge was infusing
Hakkasan's " strong Chinese DNA with local Bodrum identity. "
Like its Hakkasan siblings in the Middle East, Europe, and the U.S., the
restaurant needed to convey a sophisticated Asian fine-dining experience,
yet still feel relaxed given the aqueous backdrop. Patrons come to take in the
Aegean and the surrounding hills as much as they do to eat and drink, so " we
wanted to take subtle references from the destination through material choices
that reference seafaring and coastal life, " Lawless adds.
This translates to plenty of nautical touches, like rope and sun-washed wood
decking, as well as teal-colored textiles that call to mind the two- and threemasted
wooden sailing vessels that are a fixture of the region, called gulets.
" As for dining and lounge seating, all the fabrics for these areas are inspired by
Turkey's rich textile heritage to provide local context, " Lawless points out.
To balance out the Turkish vibes, " Hakkasan notes are subtly used to
accentuate the design, " he adds. The brand's aesthetic is captured through
elements such as the marble front desk placed before a large-scale Hakkasan
logo that organically doubles as a feature wall, as well as the bar. Its backlit blue
glass and brass trim conjure a signature Hakkasan pattern, a motif that extends
to the timber screens that demarcate space throughout. On the pergola above,
the end of each beam is also punctuated with a Hakkasan logo in more brass.
Even the " cages, " another Hakkasan hallmark, are considerate of the
environs. " We were careful to strategically situate, and in places limit, this
caging, " explains Lawless, " to allow for uninterrupted views of the Aegean. "
This page: Hakkasan Bodrum, the first fully open-air venue for the brand, is laid out on a series of decks
overlooking the Aegean Sea.
