Classic Reinterpretation
Gensler reimagines a storied San Francisco property

A
ttorney Frederick C. Clift first unveiled his eponymous San Francisco
hotel, designed by George A. Applegarth, to the hordes of travelers
descending upon the city for the Panama-Pacific International
Exposition in 1915. More than a century later, that snippet of cultural history was
top of mind when Gensler's Austin office embarked on a revamp of the property,
now known as the Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel.
According to Gensler design director Armando Iarussi, the objective was " to
reawaken the original craftsmanship of the early 1900s and infuse that with
modern-day San Francisco style to create a refined parallel. " That mission
certainly became easier upon the discovery of drawings from the Applegarth
era in the archives, inspiring the design team to conjure a residential look that
marries comfort with the elegance of a turn-of-the-century mansion.
Capturing the merriment of the milestone world's fair are the artworks
adorning the 372 guestrooms and corridors. An exhibition poster unearthed
from storage, for example, was printed onto a mirror, hung in an antique frame,
and placed by an elevator landing. Black-and-white tiles in the bathrooms nod
to 1920s fashion, just as the striped floor in the café Fredericks reinterprets a
vintage pattern that once graced the space.
" Through the course of previous renovations, most of the interior detailing
of the period had been removed, but we were able to preserve the guestroom
doors, marble stair treads and metal railings, and the paneling and lighting
in the Redwood Room, " explains Ianussi. A classic cocktail fixture since the
demise of Prohibition, the Redwood Room once again brims with Art Deco
glamour, featuring a new showpiece bar appropriately formed from an old
redwood tree and restored Gustav Klimt paintings.
Throughout the hotel, Gensler opted for a neutral palette, manifesting in the
likes of cream-colored terrazzo and muted plaster that " especially in the lobby
make it feel inviting, " points out Gensler project manager Jenne Jeske.
