Continued Legacy
Cooper Carry channels history for a resort property in the Catskills

I
n the late 1960s, the Eldred Preserve opened in New York's Catskill
Mountains as a hideaway for hunting, fishing, and hiking. During their
initial visits to this 3,000-acre site in Highland, in Sullivan County, Keith
Simmel and his team at Cooper Carry were captivated by the original building
layout. " We were determined to keep that compound feel, but to express it
architecturally in a much more contemporary way, " says Simmel, principal at the
Atlanta-based firm.
Preservation efforts, however, were more challenging than Simmel
anticipated because most of these structures were in a state of disrepair. For
example, Cooper Carry envisioned a fishing hut where guests once rented
poles " as a sort of relic, sitting away for the 'new' buildings, but acting as
a link to the old preserve, " he explains. Although the hut was unable to be
salvaged, Simmel notes that Cooper Carry did " stitch some less obvious ties
to the past into the design, " including the terrace outline along the two ponds,
which follows the footprints of the previous constructions and " allowed us to
get closer to the water's edge than we otherwise would have been able to. "
A boulder-sized chunk of coal that sat at the entry of the former restaurant
was also incorporated into the landscape design " as a clue to some of the oldtimers
who may visit the property, " adds Simmel.
Now spanning the 23-room, five-cabin Bradstan Boutique Hotel, the
Homestead Restaurant + Lounge, and an events pavilion, the Eldred Preserve
is anchored in its surroundings via materials like a " beautiful local stone, "
