Diversifying the Hospitality Industry Through
Determination, Curiosity, and Conversations

T
he hospitality industry can get the greater diversity it
needs, but women, Latinos, and other nontraditional
potential hotel owners must be determined-to take
chances and ask questions, says Lynette Montoya,
president of the Latino Hotel Association.
President of the association since 2015 and owner of her own
hotel broker business, Global Hotel Partners, since 1998, Montoya
moved into the hotel industry by seizing an opportunity to learn
about the hotel business from one of her real estate clients and
being willing to take risks. " I asked if they would be willing to teach
me. They told me everything they thought I needed to know. And
then I started knocking on doors. The first hotel I sold was from a
cold call and it was life-altering, " she says.
Women interested in the hospitality industry must be determined,
Montoya says, and just as willing to listen. " Women have to be
tough and have to be willing to work harder than anyone else, "
she says, citing the story of a young woman who works for her
who dove into hotel development by taking advantage of an
invitation to help with development even though she knew very
little about the field. " She was determined to learn, she worked
hard, and when the banks were ready, they only wanted to talk
to her. "
Montoya, founder of the Santa Fe, New Mexico Hispanic Chamber
of Commerce and a board member of the environmental thinktank
Architecture 2030 and community social services charities,
says she has never let her " comfort zone " constrain her from

taking a risk, and she urges potential Latino hotel owners to
also take chances. The Latino Hotel Association is here to help
them, she says, with knowledge, information, education, and
connections that can help them succeed.
But it's not just up to women and Latinos to push themselves
forward in the industry, the industry itself must identify the
barriers to diversity, Montoya says. " We need to start asking the
right questions. How can we make the situation better? What are
your ideas for improving diversity? We need to set aside time
specifically for these conversations. Then we must listen. Over
my career, what I have come to value most is the willingness of
people to give me their time and their perspectives. "
Bringing a variety of perspectives-to an industry still dominated
by white men-will improve the industry, she says. And bringing
nontraditional hotel owners into the industry will help build
generational wealth.
" The hospitality industry is a great industry, and it provides
opportunities to build assets that owners can pass down to
their children and grandchildren and on which their children and
grandchildren can build, " she says.
Lynette Montoya is CEO of the Latino Hotel Association and
president of Global Hotel Partners. She is on the founding
board of directors of TourismDiversityMatters.org, and serves
on the advisory council of the California State University
Hospitality and Tourism Management Education Alliance.
