Design Competition Undergraduate Winners
The 2024 NEWH Green Voice Design Competition focused on adaptive reuse and sourcing sustainable materials to
comply with the LEED v4.1 - Material Ingredients credit from the ID+C Guide. Through the use of storyboards, animation,
annotations, rapid visualization, 2D drawings and 3D perspectives, students tell a sustainable story for both the guest
experience and the employees who work onsite.

Winning Concept: Hotel Basalt
Hotel Basalt, positioned in Charlotte, North Carolina, stands as a beacon of adaptive reuse, immersing
visitors in a luxurious journey through Icelandic culture. Its architectural design seamlessly merges
modern aesthetics with organic shapes, echoing the contours of Iceland's landscape. To retain the
original structure's essence-a former textile mill-most of the brick façade will transition to a black
hue, fostering a moody ambiance and inviting exploration of the equally serene interiors.

The façade integrates solar-efficient panels, a green roof, and a minimal palette of materials, adding
dimension and visual allure to the overall structure. The entrance, grand yet accessible, welcomes
guests with expansive glass doors and a spacious reception area featuring a bar, setting the stage for a
tranquil cultural exploration complemented by traditional Icelandic cocktails. Inside, elements inspired
by Iceland converge-moss upholstery, natural basalt, soothing wood tones, concrete accents, cove
lighting, and inviting fireplaces. Thoughtfully designed lighting mimics the sun's brightness, enhancing inner harmony and evoking the Icelandic essence.
The hotel exudes an inclusive atmosphere, captivating both guests and the public, inviting them to revel in Icelandic luxury at the spa. Crafted using natural materials
like robust basalt, gentle woods, and mossy touches, the spa envelops guests in an immersive Icelandic setting. The restaurant, boasting a Michelin star, tantalizes with
Icelandic specialties complemented by an exquisite bar.
The suites, housed in a dedicated wing, ensure a
secluded experience for guests. Embracing natural
light, the suites feature panoramic windows. Upon
arrival, guests are welcomed by a serene ambiance
characterized by gentle woodwork, a neutral palette, and
hints of natural basalt. The Luxe Suite fully embraces
the Icelandic bathing culture with a freestanding tub
complimented by a warm fireplace.
