MOVE IT: INVENTORY
Right now, the biggest concern
throughout the outdoor business
space is - no surprise - inventory.
The big boom of COVID-19,
which caused more people than
ever before to start recreating
outside and had retailers scrambling
to find enough product to
keep up, is ebbing and with a
fall in demand for outdoor gear
both manufacturers and retailers
have more product on hand than
they can sell. It's a problem that
requires creative solutions and
belt-tightening.
" The people who are going to
navigate their way successfully
through this pop are the people
who are keeping a really close eye
on their cash flow and their expenses
and retailers who have a
really tight grip on their inventory, "
says Carrie Watson, founder
of Outside Looks, an independent
outdoor retail consulting
resource. " We are going to see a
lot of creative ways that people
get through inventory. Retailers
and brands alike are going to be
broadening their customer bases,
looking for new and different
customers or maybe really relying
on new customers that they
gained during the pandemic. "
Veterans, who have seen many
ups and downs in the outdoor
marketplace over the decades,
were prepared, however.
" Not all brands and shops were
surprised, " says Watson. " A lot of
the legacy brands that have gone
through a few different cycles
of sales increases and decreases
knew they needed to tailor down
their personal best again after
the personal best occurred. So
those heritage brands that have
been around for at least 15 years
did plan accordingly. What I'm
worried about is a lot of the
newer brands who have only
seen a bust or bubble from the
pandemic - maybe their leadership
got really excited or their
investors got really excited and
they just may not be as realistic
about growth. "
For those who have overextended,
the options do exist but
they require fairly drastic pricing
measures and a lot of marketing.
" I do think that we'll also

really want the availability to
see some promotion happening,
which is really odd because,
for the first time, we're seeing
so many of the fall 23 price
increases that were planned into
the assortment finally happening, "
says Watson. " There's this
weird dynamic. There's a glut in
the marketplace and retailers are
having to discount brand-new
merchandise. The big question
is how can we increase our shoppers'
spend with us and how can
we get more people in the door? "
Beyond stores working out
how to move an overabundance
of product, solutions will also
require retailers and manufacturers
to work together and find
mutual workarounds.

My retailers are hoping that that
stock continues to be available
in the future so that they can
run their businesses on a weekly
basis and do fill-ins every week, "
says Watson.
MOVING ON: SUCCESSION
PLANS
So, what happens when you
have had enough - due to financial
concerns or just being ready
to move on? According to Grassroots'
2023 membership survey,
10% of its retail stores have successfully
moved to new ownership
in the past 2 years. The best
independent outdoor retail stores
are part of the community. When
they shut down, that congregation
of outdoorists loses a voice,
a gathering place, an education
center, not to mention putting
loyal and passionate employees
out of work. Successful owners
want to leave a legacy, to see
