Team Onyx
Today, ALCC serves youth,
young adults, and veterans in the
communities of Acoma Pueblo;
Albuquerque, New Mexico; Navajo
Nation; Hopi; Zuni Pueblo;
Hopi-Kykotsmovi; and other locations
around the U.S. Projects
have included trail work, climate
change mitigation, historical
preservation, wildland fi re fi ghting,
and traditional agriculture.
YMCA BOLD & GOLD
Something magical happens
when a diverse group of young
people go into beautiful,
remote areas in nature together.
Courage, confidence, and
community awareness all come
out. YMCA Boys and Girls
Outdoor Leadership Development,
or BOLD & GOLD,
fosters this sense of awe in the
wilderness. With more than 20
locations, BOLD & GOLD programs
take small single-gender
groups of middle and high
school students into the great
outdoors without technology
to discover what it means to
truly connect, and, in turn,
learn how to be great leaders.
BOLD & GOLD is steeped in
conscious backcountry stewardship
and ethical outdoor
recreation principles, but is
more about empowering young
people of all backgrounds and
instilling the ability to face any
challenges they might encounter
head-on. " We're bringing
together youth from locations
across the country, from all
different socioeconomic backgrounds,
to learn and live
together in the outdoors, " says
Courtney Aber, BOLD & GOLD

Conservation Lands Foundation
(CLF) is the only nonprofi t
leading a national movement of
community-based advocates who
care for America's National Conservation
Lands of natural, historical,
cultural, and recreational
signifi cance. CLF is creating
diverse constituencies through
a unique, place-based approach
to conservation. This approach
advocates protection, restoration,
and expansion of biologically and
culturally signifi cant landscapes
by empowering local on-theground
organizations. Localized
programming includes youth-education
initiatives, cultural
history and preservation, outdoor
engagement, and amplifi cation of
Team Onyx
Team Onyx is the fi rst all-Black
team in expedition racing, representing
the best qualities and
strength that come from diversity.
A mixture of gay and straight
athletes ranging in age from their
20s to 50s, Team Onyx is working
to change the face of adventure
sports. The team is built
on a dream to show the world
that adventure sports are more
diversely supported than they
look at fi rst glance. Adventure
racer Clifton Lyles assembled the
team to make history and race
in the World's Toughest Race:
Eco-Challenge Fiji, and the team
continues to race globally. " I want
people to see that the only limits
that we have are the limits we
place on ourselves. We wanted
to show African Americans and
other people of color that they
have a place in the outdoors and
that sports like adventure racing
are not off-limits for people of
color, " says Lyles.
