Big Trends

Trail Tested
The hiking gear on display at the Show
invites everyone to adventure and explore-
anyhow, anytime, anywhere.
By Berne Broudy
THE 2020 PANDEMIC PUT THE
outdoors on the map for many
people. With bars, restaurants,
nightclubs, gyms, and pretty
much everything else closed,
people fl ocked to the outdoors,
discovering hiking, walking,
exploring on foot-in many cases
near their homes. That pushed
the industry's creep toward
inclusivity to new levels and
helped brands understand the
opportunity of broadening their
audience.
" The trend right now is to
bridge the worlds of authentic
outdoor and outdoor lifestyle, "
says Peter Sachs, general manager
at Lowa Boots. " With the
new Axos family, we've taken a
signifi cant step forward in our
quest to create modern styles
with lightweight, athletic performance
and dynamic shelf appeal
while retaining our relentless
commitment to quality, fi t, and
comfort. "
The men's and women's Axos
GTX Mid and Lo ($230-$250)
are vegan shoes with a modern
look, low-profi le sole, and lightweight
athletic performance.
They feature seamless, welded
polyurethane synthetic uppers
with a comfort cuff set on a new
sneaker-inspired outsole. In the
" everyday outdoor category, " the
men's and women's Malta GTX
Mid and Lo ($190-$210) blend
the performance of an outdoor
34
shoe with the look of a luxury
sneaker. The Malta easily transitions
from city streets to the
outdoors. It's meant to be worn
everywhere, every day.
Tim Fish, Rab's product director,
says, " The outdoor industry
is working hard to be inclusive of
all body types and backgrounds
while also being light, fast, and
eco-friendly. Lighter, more effi -
cient gear and good planning lets
a hiker see more and accomplish
more without being a superathlete.
For some, a six-hour hike
to a lake is best tackled as an
overnight. But with the evolution
of gear, for some a six-hour
hike could be done in a day
without being a sufferfest. " Rab
made its Aeon LT ($110-$143)
lightweight multi-activity packs
for fast hiking and running in
varied terrain. The series is feature-rich
but streamlined, with
a body-hugging harness and a
molded back panel that fi t comfortably
and securely, enabling
dynamic movement with on-thego
access pockets.
" More people are hiking now
than ever before, and new hikers
are looking for gear that can
serve multiple functions or purposes,
says Craig Frazee, UCO's
design engineer. " These consumers
aren't looking for niche,
technical gear-they're looking
for the gear they can use in the
multiple outdoor pursuits they're

trying out, or in their everyday
life. UCO's 5 Piece Mess Kit
($30) is perfect for every kind of
outdoor adventure, from hiking
and camping to paddling and
picnics. Plus, as people continue
to return to work and school,
mess kits are a great way to pack
a lunch. "
Meaghan Ruby, content marketing
specialist at Minus33,
says, " We noticed our customers
were pushing their gear to its
limits with more intense sports
and demanding activities. We
needed to make more durable
products. " With that in mind,
Minus33 created a microweight
wool-nylon fabric and its Woolverino
collection-durable,
high-performing merino wool
garments that are suitable for all
kinds of high-intensity activities.
On the fl ip side, Minus33 also
created the heavyweight Wilderness
Expedition collection, made
to withstand extreme environments
and temperatures. Ruby
says that collection is one of the
warmest and thickest merino
wool options on the market.
In 2020, a record number of
dogs and puppies were brought
home. Now, more outdoor lovers
want to share their adventures
with their pups. So hiking gear
for dogs is on the rise, too. " As
pandemic restrictions continue to
be lifted and people are gathering
and traveling, they want to
incorporate their pets into their
lifestyle, " says Penny Stolfe of
Carolina Pet Company, which
partners with Pendleton. Their
collab Adventure Series uses
100% recycled-polyester webbing
printed with iconic Pendleton
National Park stripes and classic
jacquard patterns, with harnesses
for those long hikes and puffer
coats to keep your doggies warm
on chilly adventures
Uncharted Supply Co.'s Wolf
Pack is a dog collar that doubles as
a fi rst aid kit for your furry hiking
companion. It features a small
zipper compartment on the collar
that's packed with lifesaving fi rst
aid essentials any hiker would need
should their dog get injured while
hiking or adventuring outdoors.
" As dog adoption rates continue
to soar in 2021, people are also
bringing their dogs on hikes
and backcountry adventures, "
says Uncharted's CEO Christian
Schauf. " While it's great exercise
and a great bonding experience, it's
important owners are prepared for
the unexpected. "
Eric Burbank, VP of The Keen
Effect, Keen Footwear's global
social activism initiative focusing
on access, diversity/inclusion, and
protecting the planet, says, " We're
seeing a continued shift in new
participants bringing different
attitudes about what 'outdoor' is.
Activities are taking place closer
to home, from backyards to local
parks. Outside is anywhere you go.
It's not about solo, extreme activities.
We're also seeing a strong
trend toward fi tness-a hybridization
of fi tness and outside that is
more athletic inspired. As sports
teams took a hit during the pandemic,
families and friend pods
became 'the team.' Twenty-fi ve
percent of new participants say
they won't stay outside when the
pandemic is done. We have to fi nd
ways to continue to be welcoming
and inclusive. "
Keen's NXIS EVO Mid and
Low ($170-$180) is the lightest
and fastest Keen hiker. It features
Keen's original comfort fi t
and iconic toe bumper for protection
as well as a proprietary
horseshoe tread grip from heel
brake to toe roll.
