Vertical Integration
Pro skier and entrepreneur Julian Carr aligns big air with
big environmental activism. By Julian Carr
MY NAME IS JULIAN CARR. I AM A PROFESSIONAL SKIER, ENTREPRENEUR,
and activist. It's an honor to be checking in with you all at Outdoor Retailer.
I am honored to be able to share that I have received the 2021 George
Mallory Award, which is given out every year by the Wasatch Mountain
Arts Board. The award is given to a person or persons who have pushed the
boundaries of the human experience and redefined what we believe is possible.
Furthermore, it serves as a lifetime achievement award for adventure
(although I feel as though I am just getting started!).
I am ecstatic and humbled by this honor for many reasons-including
that there were so many qualified candidates in our amazing industry, and
that previous recipients include inspiring people such as climber Conrad
Anker, climber Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, and ultramarathoner Jared Campell.

My family was with me at the award ceremony in Salt Lake City this past
November. It gave me a chance to say thank you to them. They have supported
me and inspired me through my entire career, and having them with

me when I received an honor so
meaningful to me was so special.
The selection committee for
the award informed me that my
inspiring achievements in skiing
as well as my passion for getting
people outdoors through building
the Cirque Series were key reasons
I was chosen. This was so rewarding
to hear because creating the
Cirque Series and developing a way
for more people to participate in
mountain sports has always been
important to me. Over the years,
the Cirque Series has pledged
$1 for each entry to some of my
favorite environmental nonprofits,
including POW, Save Our Canyons,
SUWA, and Utah Open Lands.
Cirque Series races start at the
base of ski resorts across the UnitDESPITE
SUCH VERTICAL AND
MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN, WE APPEAL
TO RUNNERS WITHOUT MUCH TRAIL
RUNNING EXPERIENCE AS WELL
AS PROS AND SPONSORED ATHLETES.
