UTAH-BASED PHOTOGRAPHER
Will Saunders came into the outdoors
through skiing, climbing, and
raft guiding but he didn't begin to
pursue photography professionally
until a chance meeting with renowned
photojournalist Dan Morrison
at the University of Oregon. " If
you switch to journalism, " he said.
" I'll take you under my wing. " That
offer changed the course of Saunders'
life. After college, Saunders assisted
adventure and studio photographer
Tim Kemple for two years. He then
struck out on his own, shooting
lifestyle, storytelling, and brand
campaigns in the outdoors with a
playful spirit and sophisticated eye.
At 27, Saunders has already produced
a remarkable body of commercial
photography at a high level,
but, at his core, he considers himself
an expedition photographer. " That's
absolutely my passion and my love, "
he says. " If money wasn't an object
just, I'd just embed myself with a
person or community for 30, 40
days and document that life. "

NEW PERSPECTIVE
" The producer for an Arc'Teryx
social campaign came to me
with this idea of shooting women's
running with more of an
editorial fashion approach, " says
Saunders. " It's easy to go to an
epic location and put a runner
on a ridge and fire off a banger,
but we went to a field and a
gravel pit. It was a different vibe,
so you have to put your head
in a different place, with tight
crops and weird angles. Some of
these shots felt like they weren't
really working until I got back
and they paired up beautifully. "
