With hundreds of outdoor
brands hiring every position
imaginable (from graphic designer
to lead software engineer), there's
never been a better time to make a
change that aligns you more closely
with your passions, compensation

Having said that, job hunting can
be arduous, confusing, and humbling
without a network to lean on.
Luckily, members of Basecamp's
30,000-strong community of outdoor
industry professionals stepped
up to share the tips that helped
them land dream gigs recently.
Leverage Your Network
Lauren Samuels

One of my outdoor MBA instructors
made us pick two companies we want
to work for and find three people
at each company to connect with
for an informational meeting. My
two companies were Salomon and
Specialized. The Salomon people I
spoke with put in a good word for me.
I didn't just meet with them once to
check off the assignment. I met with
each of them multiple times and kept
the dialogue going over the months.
It made it easy to reach out for help
in my application/interviewing.

culture, DEI, pay transparency, and
what she liked/disliked about working
at the org. She ended up sharing
my name with the hiring manager
and giving me his email so that I
could reach out personally.
Finesse your Cover Letter

Demonstrate that you are a good
human first and foremost-that you
live a meaningful life, you're humble,
you're a team player, and you
are someone who others feel drawn
to work with. Tell stories that prove
how your life lessons or interests
and experiences make you the best
candidate. I almost always mention
whiskey, sunsets, and tailgate charcuterie
in my cover letters, because
those are things I love and those
things help people relate to me. (Obviously
also sell your skills.) Finally,
write and speak well, and trust the
process. Know it'll take longer than
you expect, and embrace the fact
that job hunting is one of the most
humbling things we do in our lives.

For me, it's all about relationships. I
go above and beyond to meet people
throughout the organization (no
matter their title), ask questions,
take on stretch projects to diversify
my background, and, above all, be
a breath of fresh air to any and all
departments. A smile and being
friendly goes a long way.

I accepted a job for the organization
that was part time, seasonal, and
hourly before I got the full-time job
that I really wanted. I met everyone
I could, and my supervisor was
amazing and super supportive of
me getting full-time work there, so
she talked me up and made lots of
introductions. When the job I really
wanted opened up four months
later, I got it!

spend 20 minutes the day
prior coming up with questions
about the organization. It's important
to remember that while the
recruiter is trying to determine if
you're a fit for the company, you're
also trying to decide if the company
is a good fit for you! Not only do
questions help you determine the
best fit, but they show the recruiter
that you're seriously interested and
spent time preparing.
