LAST NIGHT, THE FOURTH ANNual
Outdoor Retailer Innovation
Awards were unveiled in a
ceremony held in the Colorado
Convention Center. The coveted
Product of the Year award went
to Eddie Bauer for its BC Flyline
Jacket and Bibs, a groundbreaking
collaboration with adaptive
ski athlete Trevor Kennison. Together,
they created the fi rst-ever
adaptive-ski-specifi c outerwear
kit. The two-piece suit is waterproof,
insulated, and designed to
work with the unique way sit-skiers
move on the mountain.

spinal cord injury in a 2014 snowboarding
accident on Vail Pass that
left him paralyzed, asked Eddie
Bauer to remove zippers and pockets
at the pants' hips to mitigate
skin chafi ng, a perennial issue for
sit-skiers. " Especially in springtime,
snow piles up on my lap, and
I just get soaked, " Kennison says.
Instead, he suggested generous
pockets at the bibs' chest. " We
made the bib pants long enough to
cover the ankles-regular ski pants
are like highwaters!-and insulated
them through the ankles, "
he says. The jacket is tailored to
be slightly shorter in the front, so
extra material doesn't bunch up
at the waist for a sit-skier. " I also
eliminated the hood because I'm
sitting so low and in powder, I just
end up with so much snow in the

With the Innovation Awards,
Outdoor Retailer recognizes
companies on the cutting edge,
carefully considered gear products,
programs, and retail services.
The 15-judge panel consists of
snowsports industry veterans,
designers, academics, and engineers.
This year, judges included
adventure travel pioneer Richard
Bangs; Tracy Gray, founder of
the 22 Fund and a former NASA
systems engineer; and Erin
MacDonald, assistant professor
of mechanical engineering at
Stanford University. From a pool
of 152 entries, the judges chose 35
fi nalists, which are on display at
the Show. In addition to Product
of the Year, 14 other winners were
selected from the fi nalist pool.
Here's a rundown:
The Smith I/O MAG Imprint 3D
goggles are the fi rst goggles built
to the individualized features of a
wearer's face. Utilizing Smith's app,
users scan their faces, and then a
customized frame is 3D printed,
tailored to the exact contours of
the user's face.
SheFly Apparel Go There Pants
won for its technical all-season
hiking pants, which feature a
discreet zipper women can use to
answer nature's call without dropping
their drawers and exposing
their backsides.
Nordic-Step is a universal shoe
harness for cross-country skis that
allows multiple users to access
a single set of cross-country skis
regardless of shoe size or type. The
product combines modern snowshoe-binding
technology with a
cross-country ski boot sole to allow
any winter footwear to be used as
the " ski boot. "
