What kind of safety issues translate
from in-bounds to backcountry?
One
of the big safety issues is with
expert-level in-bounds skiers and
riders. They aren't intimidated by
avalanche terrain, and thus are
more likely to access that terrain
once they're in the backcountry.
Because they are accustomed to
avalanche mitigation and have
skied avalanche terrain in-bounds
with no consequences, their
judgment of avalanche terrain in
the backcountry may be skewed
by their past experiences in a more
controlled environment.
How would you like to see resorts
better support new backcountry
travelers?
Develop uphill-access programs
and lessons oriented around these
programs, and know that this
comes with its own set of challenges
and a significant workload for
already overloaded employees.
If we point fingers at who should
be responsible for educating new
backcountry skiers and riders,
the work won't get done. We need
partnerships between ski resorts,
backcountry guiding companies, avalanche
centers, and avalanche-education
providers to undertake the
work that needs to happen.
ERIN LAINE, SKI GUIDE AND
AVALANCHE EDUCATOR
What are the biggest gaps in
knowledge you're seeing in new
backcountry travelers who are
coming straight from the resort?
Resort skiers are generally very
strong skiers who are used to aggressive
terrain. The transition to a
more cautious and patient mindset
can be challenging. Terrain we might
ski everyday at the resort might only
be appropriate in the backcountry a
handful of days per season.
What do you think guiding operations
need to offer more of for
new backcountry recreationists?
A cultural shift is needed toward
more mentorship from professional
mountain guides and a heavier
emphasis on education before
engaging avalanche terrain.
CAITLIN YONG, FOUNDER
OF BACKCOUNTRY TOGETHER
How
does your organization support
new backcountry travelers,
particularly those who are fresh
from the resort?
Backcountry Together is an inclusive
community and organization
that supports new backcountry
travelers by hosting meetups. We
value introducing segments of the
backcountry experience little by
little to not overburden enthusiasts
with new information and
skills. At our inbound meetups,
we welcome BIPOC and ally
skiers and snowboarders to try
a backcountry-ski or splitboard
setup for the first time. One of our
brand partners, Weston, provides
ski and splitboard setups for our
community at no cost, and we try
to find resorts with low-cost or
free uphill season passes. There
is already a large barrier to entry
into backcountry when it comes
to skills, knowledge, and gear.
Backcountry Together believes
the first step is for new backcountry
travelers to practice with
their touring setup and uphill in
resorts as much as possible. Once
they feel ready to venture outof-bounds,
we recommend new
users take an avalanchesafety
course.
What would you like to see the
ski industry doing to support
both new and existing backcountry
users?
OUTDOOR RETAILER SNOW SHOW 2022 /

The ski industry must invest in
education and awareness, and
team up industry-wide to support
positive, inclusive, and equitable
spaces for backcountry recreation.
Work with DEI specialists and
nonprofit organizations in the
space to host in-person or virtual
education events and provide
resources for the community.

for new backcountry travelers
to learn-this will make a great
impact on the local community.
No more gatekeeping, shaming
new backcountry travelers (especially
splitboarders), and limiting
the growth of our amazing
backcountry community. Today
is the day to make the backcountry
more inclusive, diverse, and
equitable.
