THE PULSE
THE WORLD WANTS MORE
BIKES, BUT IT CAN'T
GET THEM. SO, INSTEAD,
BRANDS ARE WORKING
WITH SALES REPS AND
DEALERS TO PLACE " REALISTIC "
ORDERS BASED
ON WHAT BRANDS SAY
THEY CAN SUPPLY.
" That hasn't happened. Our sales program
will be looking at supply a quarter or trimester
at a time. We'll only sell what we believe we will
have in stock for that period. "
To compound the confusion, prices are
climbing haphazardly, particularly for historically
less-expensive bikes. Campbell says
he's lost count of how many times he's redone
Yeti's 2022 pricing, which will go up 8-15% for
2022. But there are rumors of $800 bikes now
costing $1400.
Greg Davis, owner of DFC Cycles and
Fitness and South Plains Cycles-both 3,000plus
square-foot shops in Lubbock, Texas-
corroborates NPD's data. " Any decrease the
bike industry sees is because the supply chain
is broken, " says Davis. " I look every day to see
how to get something new to replace what's
going out the door. "
Davis predicts that in the short term, there
will continue to be high demand and low supply
for bikes-that it's going to be a struggle for
another year and a half.
Just like NPD's respondents as well as
Marin and Yeti, Davis believes that when
demand finally tapers and warehouses are
restocked, sales numbers won't be as high as
they are now, but they'll be a lot higher than
they were in 2018 and 2019.
" There will be an increase in business to
be done, " says Davis. " More people are coming
into the sport, more people are riding for
transportation, more vacationers are bringing
their bikes. Cycling is becoming part of the
fabric of peoples' lives. That will trickle out and
down, and there's no sign it's going to end. "

DREAM BIG
Garmin published a book that encourages girls
to undertake adventure and tells the stories of
those who have lived to the fullest.
Earlier this year, Garmin published a children's
book, Women of Adventure: Being Brave in a
Big World, to inspire the next generation of explorers.
This continues its Women of Adventure
(WoA) platform, which includes the WoAthemed
fenix 6S watch and a series of profile
stories on garmin.com.
The book is a collection of six true stories of
women who have overcome obstacles and adversity.
Each profile shares how these women
started being curious and adventurous as young
girls and explores what drove them to achieve
great things. The stories are intended to create
conversation between girls and their parents to
help future generations fulfill their dreams.
Each story includes an Explore page that
teaches readers about wayfinding, geology,
flight, and more. The book is available for sale on
garmin.com, with all proceeds divided evenly
among organizations designated by each of
its Women of Adventure, including supporting
causes that clean up coastlines, empower
women and girls worldwide with donated bikes,
and educate and inspire girls through STEMrelated
efforts. -Cameron Martindell
HIPSTER HAVENS
The annual listing of places to live with bike paths, kombucha, craft brew, foreign film references,
and ironic tees finds a new champion in California but stumbles in the Lone Star State.
San Francisco toppled Brooklyn as the epicenter of hipsterdom this year, at least according to a
study by (of all outlets) the landscapers at LawnStarter. The survey looked at " 23 anti-mainstream
factors-from the number of thrift stores, farmers markets, and record stores to urban gardening-
and biking-friendliness " (Fred Armisen
be praised!). The City by the Bay also topped
LawnStarter's list of best places to visit without
a car; though-no surprise to anyone who has
lived there-it's also just behind Manhattan as
the most expensive city in the U.S. according to
Investopedia. (Those matcha lattes are tough on a
budget.) However, outside of Austin, Texas doesn't
seem to appreciate vinyl-loving xeriscapers with
well-manicured facial hair. The state had five cities
in the bottom 10 of the rankings, including Amarillo
coming in last. (Wait...don't hipsters dig the nonconformity
of losing a silly contest?) See the full
