Motorola Solutions Buys Access
Control Startup Openpath
▶ CHICAGO - Motorola Solutions has
entered into a definitive agreement to acquire
Openpath Security, a Cloud-based
mobile access control provider, for undisclosed
terms.
Openpath Co-Founders James Segil and
Alex Kazerani spent two years of intensive
market research and proptech development
before launching their Cloud-managed
access control startup in 2018. Based
in Los Angeles, the company's platform focuses
on integrated technology to provide
frictionless mobile access and scalable
Cloud-based solutions that can also be integrated
with legacy systems.
The company's wares - which can supplement
or replace physical badges with a
digital badge stored on a smartphone -
are striking a chord with stakeholders in
the built world. Openpath claims to unlock
more than five million doors per month,
and last July the company closed a Series
C funding round of $36 million (bringing
total funding to $63 million to date).
" Securing businesses around the world
has never been more critical, " states Greg
Brown, chairman and CEO, Motorola Solutions.
" This acquisition enables us to combine
the power of video security and access
control together, providing unprecedented
tion suit in Florida federal court alleging
Vivint salespeople go to ADT customers'
homes, get them to sign Vivint contracts
and install the company's alarm systems
in their homes under false pretenses.
Openpath was founded in 2018 by James
Segil and Alex Kazerani.
situational awareness, where every physical
entry and exit is authenticated and recorded
with access control and video. "
The combined leadership of Motorola
Solutions and Openpath in video security
and access control will allow Motorola
Solutions to build on its extensive footprint
in supporting enterprise customers
with an unparalleled security solution, according
to Brown.
The acquisition is the latest in a series
of transactions that Motorola Solutions
has completed since acquiring Avigilon
in 2018. The company has continued to
expand its portfolio with deals for WatchGuard,
IndigoVision, VaaS International
Holdings and Pelco.
Global Video Market Forecast
to Grow 14% in 2021
▶ NEWPORT PAGNELL, England - Despite
unprecedented headwinds in 2020 due to
the COVID-19 pandemic, a new report from
Novaira Insights forecast the global market
for video surveillance equipment and software
will grow at 14.3% in 2021 and will be
worth an estimated $24.5 billion.
The report states the market declined
2.6% in 2020, and yet forecasts a rapid
recovery and high growth over the next
five years. Restrictions in response to the
COVID-19 pandemic meant that many
organizations were closed for large parts
of the year. Many of them were in sectors
which normally invest heavily in video surveillance
equipment (e.g. education facilities,
banks, airports, retailers, sports venues,
casinos, hotels, fitness centers).
" High growth in sectors like healthcare
and critical infrastructure somewhat compensated
for big declines elsewhere. Also,
in early 2020, a market for body temperature
monitoring solutions emerged, often
sold by video surveillance vendors utilizing
their expertise in video, " Woodhouse says.
" These products provided a short-term
boost to their revenues. "
ADT Hits Vivint With Patent
Infringement
▶ BOCA RATON, Fla. - ADT has levied actions
for patent infringement against Vivint
Smart Home. Separate but related actions
were filed with the U.S. International Trade
Commission and in the U.S. District Court
for the Western District of Texas.
Vivint has introduced and promoted a
series of products - including the Vivint
Home Security System, SkyControl Panel
and Vivint Smart Hub - willfully infringing
upon several of ADT's patents, the complaint
asserts. The patents cover ADT's investments
and innovations in smart home
integration, data collection and control

panel functions and interfaces, among
other capabilities and features.
Vivint has stated it believes the claims
are completely without merit and that the
complaint is a reactionary countersuit to a
patent infringement complaint Vivint had
previously filed on Feb. 25, 2021 against
ADT in the U.S. District Court for the District
of Utah.
The two residential security powerhouses
have become familiar foes in legal venues
during the past several years. In 2017,
ADT sued Vivint for allegedly engaging in
deceptive sales practices. Months later
Vivint settled the lawsuit for $10 million.
Last August, ADT filed an unfair competiSecurity

In some markets such as the U.S., the
pandemic acted as catalyst for end users
making greater use of Cloud and managed
services in their video surveillance systems.
According to Jon Cropley, principal analyst
at Novaira Insights, " Revenues for
software and managed services continued
to grow in the U.S. in 2020 while revenues
for hardware declined. "
