market losses
effected spillover.

s we look back at 2022 and
continue to march forward into
2023, cybersecurity and physical
security industry participants
may be shaking their head at the apparent
disconnect between customer demand and
stock price declines. While company revenues
have remained strong, security stock valuations
are generally down and have not been immune
from the broader market selloff this past year.
Th at said, the continued customer need for
more eff ective and innovative security solutions
should provide some comfort for long-term industry
participants.
Th e broader stock market came under pressure
in 2022 due to a confl uence of macro
factors, and security stocks have not been able
to provide a haven from the carnage. Publicly
traded cybersecurity companies, represented by
the HACK ETF and CIBR ETF, traded down
28% and 26% in 2022. Th e S&P 500 and
NASDAQ declined 20% and 34% in 2022,
with the S&P's exposure to energy, utility, and
consumer staple companies providing much of

the relative outperformance vs. the tech-heavy
NASDAQ and cyber indices. While faring
better than either of the cybersecurity indices,
physical security stocks showed a general decline
consistent with the broader market.
Despite a decline in stock price and valuation
for many security companies in 2022, the
importance and continued growth of these
companies has not diminished as physical
and cybercrime rates remain stubbornly high.
Many security companies maintain healthy
revenue growth rates as demand for their products
and services continues unabated. In fact,
security and cybersecurity remain top of mind
for many executives, with 70% of CEOs in a
PWC survey saying they are " extremely concerned "
about this. Companies will continue
to invest in and adopt leading security and cybersecurity
practices to prevent the devastating
consequences that often come with an attack or
breach of company defenses.
