particularly in public spaces. As a result, the call
for handsfree door openings and the desire for
contactless EAC keeps growing.
What's also increased during the past few
years is the availability of more and newer
low-energy door operators, hold-open devices
and wave-to-open (WTO) switches that have
made the technology more affordable and realistic
to install for an expanding range of organizations,
locations, and applications. The adoption
of mobile EAC credentials as a contactless
solution is also on the rise.
Until more recently, door operator technologies
were primarily built around high-energy
systems, like the ones that power fully automated
sliders
at
high-traffic
retail locations.
These require high-voltage installations and the
electricians certified to wire them, which inevitably
results in a higher price tag that's often
not an option for those who want similar automatic
capabilities for lower traffic applications.
Low-energy/low-voltage options now remove
that obstacle and allow integrators to do the
complete installation.
In the past, low-energy door operators were
typically associated with ADA openings. Now,
you see them being installed on office doors,

conference room openings, and collaboration
area entries as well as on doors in common areas
like restrooms, company cafes, and other
applications. Paired with WTO sensors or EAC
devices, these solutions greatly reduce or eliminate
the need to touch a handle, pull, or push
plate. They're also very convenient for those
with their hands full or wheeling a cart.
For integrators, newer low-energy door systems
create more opportunities to engage with
more customers at a deeper level, identify additional
needs, and offer new solutions that complement
the access control technologies already
in place. The technology also allows integrators
to provide the full scope of installation services,
without having to subcontract electrical work.
All this helps reinforce the integrator's relationship
as a knowledgeable advisor and trusted
full-service partner - the kind of expertise that
also opens the door for new prospects.
Sensors and EAC Credentials
In the past, most low-energy openers were activated
by pressing a large button with a hand,
elbow or even a hip or by a sensor detecting
the motion of someone approaching the door.
These remain in use, of course, but now it's
