On the RISE
In Partnership With
Magos' Nicole Palumbo Excited
to Experience Evolution of Security
Nicole Palumbo, Director
of Strategic Partnerships,
Magos Systems
▶ What has your career path been?
Nicole Palumbo: I joined the security industry
at the age of 21 by accident, like many. I started
my career at DVTEL [now part of Teledyne
FLIR] in a role that primarily involved sales operations,
order entry and customer service. From
there, I accelerated to the management team
within two years and absorbed the return merchandise
authorization department and warehouse
team. I've been in the industry for over
13 years and have worked at companies that
specialize in biometrics, access control, identity
management and now Magos Systems, which is a
global leader in radar detection technology.
On the RISE is a bi-monthly
column by the Security
Industry Association (SIA)
in partnership with Security
Sales & Integration profiling
the next generation of
security industry leaders.
This column is part of
SIA's RISE initiative, a
community that fosters
the careers of young
professionals in the security
through networking and
career growth events,
education and professional
development offerings and
scholarship opportunities.
Who has influenced or mentored you -
within the security field or outside?
NP: I would attribute much of the growth that
I have experienced to the people who have mentored
me along the way. While at DVTEL, Yaron
Zussman [currently general manager of Magos
Americas] and Maria Cambria [VP of sales enablement
- solutions at Teledyne FLIR, see page
30] each took me under their wing and showed
me the ropes not only within the organization,
but also in the security industry as a whole. Both
Yaron and Maria have been constants in my life.
They've given me a space to learn and grow while
being unapologetically myself.
Early in my career, I was given the opportunity
to go to shows like ASIS [now GSX], ISC East
and ISC West. This kind of participation was not
necessarily typical of someone in my role at the
time, but going to trade shows and networking
events provided the chance to get on the ground
and meet people face to face and get the full experience
of being a part of the security industry.
What advice do you have for young
people just starting out in the industry?
NP: Give your all, ask questions, be confident
and seek opportunities to assist or shadow wherever
possible. Never be afraid to put yourself out
there and ask for a seat at the table. When I started,
I knew very little about the industry, but I
learned quickly because I was curious and ambitious.
There are many facets to this industry with
lots of exciting opportunities. Everyone has the
opportunity to be a leader and make a difference,
regardless of job title.
What are some key components of your
role with Magos Systems?
NP: My role as director of strategic partnerships
is multifaceted and involves engaging with strategic
integrators and end users in different vertical
markets including utilities, datacenters and critical
infrastructure across North America. I also
work closely with our technical partners focusing
on joint collaboration. The role closely aligns
with my own passion in the technology solutions
side of the security industry while protecting
people, places and assets.
What are your security industry
predictions for the next five-10 years?
NP: I believe that there will be more of an emphasis
on software development that provides
proactive solutions verses many of the reactionary
solutions that are used today. Software and
artificial intelligence will be integral to these advancements.
At Magos, we see the future of security
with sensor fusion. With this fusion, we've
realized and accomplished a higher accuracy and
significant reduction of nuisance alarms for site
protection by running machine learning on both
the camera and radar sensor. This will continue
to get better with further advancement in technology
and partnerships.
Similarly, as we see with the development
of drone and robotic technology, automation
of processes and efficiency tools are being developed
for proactive system maintenance and
security operation management. I'm looking
forward and am honored to being a part of the
evolution of security!
