HOME AUTOMATION
▶ MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - The
coalition behind the Matter standard,
which aims to unify the smart home ecosystem
led by the likes of Amazon, Apple
and Google, announced it will delay the
release of the interoperability protocol
until 2022.
The Connectivity Standards Alliance,
formerly Zigbee Alliance, was initially expected
to roll out the first certifications
for the smart home standard this fall.
Originally referred to as Project Connected
Home over IP (Project CHIP), Matter
is a unified IP-based connectivity that
aims to create a universal protocol for developers
to build IoT devices.
In a blog post, Connectivity Standards
Alliance (CSA) CEO Tobin Richardson

Matter Standard Release Delayed Till 2022
In the first half of 2022, the group expects
to see the SDK released, the first devices
through certification and the launch
of a formal certification program, he said.
There are currently more than 200
companies committed to the standard.
While Richardson did not specifically
detail the reasons for postponing Matter's
release, he shared with technology writer
Stacey Higginbotham that the resurgence

Survey: 41% of Smart Home Security
Consumers Buy Video Services
▶ PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. - According to the latest Home Automation
Ownership & Usage Report from NPD Group's Connected
Intelligence, 41% of consumers who purchased security cameras,
security systems or smart doorbells at retail choose to pay for
a subscription service to access premium features.
With unit sales of these products expected to grow nearly 20%
through 2023, according to the market research firm's Future of
Tech report, this creates an opportunity for smart home manufacturers
to appeal to consumers for supplemental revenue.
NPD's latest data reveals that consumers who purchase these
subscription service plans after buying their devices at retail are
often individuals under the age of 35, who have a household income
of more than $100,000, are more likely to have young children,
and are also more likely than nonsubscribers to live in multiunit
buildings or townhomes.
Additionally, subscribers are more invested in smart home
technology, with 41% owning five or more different types of smart
home devices, while only 25% of nonsubscribers do.
" Smart home subscription services have long been seen as a
path to profitability for smart home manufacturers, but creating
offerings that are appealing to consumers - from both a features
and financials standpoint - will be key to creating a loyal base, "
says Jill Aldort, director, industry analyst for the NPD Group.
The NPD survey is based on consumer panel research that is

of COVID-19 attributed to the delay.
" When working toward a device standard,
engineers need to test the devices
and get together in person. The CSA has
held four different testing events so far,
with at least two more planned for later
this year. But the resurgence of the coronavirus
has meant that companies are still
figuring out their plans for supporting
business travel, " Higginbotham says.
said to reach more than 5,000 U.S. consumers, aged 18+ from
diverse regions and demographical backgrounds. The survey was
fielded March 17-31.
