We picked up the phone or chatted to
people. The whole idea of going to work
is as much social as work, if all we are
going to do is communicate via email
why do we need to go to the oﬃce? The
reason is the importance of interacting
with others - how are you doing that if
you are just emailing each other?

MAKING SOCIAL MEDIA WORK
'I'm not saying you shouldn't use social
media, it's very useful, but let's not
throw the baby out with the bath water.
Of course use LinkedIn, but don't stop
talking to people as well.
'If I want to broadcast a message and
share my expertise with 2.7 million
people the best way is to blog about it
on LinkedIn. If I want to make an
announcement I can do it on Twitter,
it's a diﬀerent platform.
'But when I do my day to day work
and interacting with businesses and
colleagues I should be doing that by
phone or in person.
'If people email me I phone them
back and that shocks them, but it's a

great icebreaker and it shows I am
real, human and approachable and that
I don't hide behind emails.

IF IT'S WORTH SAYING, SAY IT

'If you've got something worth saying, if
you really have a strong opinion on an
industry or topic, then do as I do on
LinkedIn and share it.
'I share my thoughts and views on
how people can learn and develop in
recruitment: people ﬁnd that useful and
that in turn has created a following.
This brand then drives business. The
consequence of my success on LinkedIn
has become an invaluable part of my
business and it helps drive a huge
amount of traﬃc to my business, a
phenomenal amount.
'I started three years ago and was the
most unlikely person because I don't
come from that generation and it's not
that I had a track record in blogging or
anything like it. But as a business owner
I needed to embrace social media. It's a
poor excuse to say "I'm a small business
so I don't know about anything", it's
recognising that it is part and parcel of

your USPs, share your views on your
industry or your sector, that way you
will attract a following and in turn you
will win more business.'
