JC Autumn 2020 OSJCT jw5.indd 2 Sian's story Sian Howse is deputy home manager at Edwardstow Court Care Centre in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire. She joined OSJCT in 2009 as a housekeeper, before progressing to head housekeeper and then working as a carer - in four years progressing from carer to relief care leader to care leader and then to unit leader. Sian is now completing her level 5 in health and social care to enable her to progress to a manager's position within the trust. " I have always been the kind of person who really likes to make a difference to people's lives, " says Sian. " This is why I know the care industry is for me. I really believe in the trust's values and am grateful for the opportunities " This year has brought about the most significant challenge facing social care in its history " that arose, which is also why I have never thought about leaving The Orders of St John Care Trust. " Positions and progression All colleagues receive competitive pay above the national living wage, with regular enhancements for additional qualifications. There are many opportunities for progression within the Trust after joining as a carer. New carers receive two days of training and e-learning in the first month to gain a carer qualification followed by assessment during the next two -to-six months and then continuous professional development.
