IN FOCUS In February 2011 the Leeds Apprenticeship Challenge was launched with the first milestone for 100 employers to offer 100 apprenticeships. Tom Riordan, Chief Executive, Leeds City Council Yorkshire Green energy Hull, Humber and East Riding are set to undergo thorough development in the next few years, particularly as a result of the joint bid by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council to the Regional Growth Fund (RGF), which has recently been accepted and secured £25 million to stimulate private sector investment in the sub-region. The RGF is set up by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), which aims to create or safeguard in excess of 200,000 jobs in England. Green energy is set to be a major area of growth for Hull, Humber and East Riding. In fact, Prime Minister David Cameron has said that Hull is poised to become the “world’s leader” in turbine manufacturing. It has been announced that Siemens is planning to build an £80 million wind turbine factory in Hull, which could potentially create about 10,000 jobs across the sub-region. Services industries In Yorkshire, service industries are a crucial contributor to the economy, especially in Leeds and Bradford, and will continue to have an important part to play in the future employment of the area. Currently, service industries account for over 80% of total employment in Leeds, encompassing some of the largest employers in the city such as Leeds City Council that employs 33,000 people and Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust with approximately 13,000 employees, as well private-sector employers, namely Asda, Barclays and Natwest. Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency (RDA) for the Yorkshire and Humber region, predicts that the main areas of growth for North Yorkshire between 2007 and 2015 will be business services, health and transport. This is likely to be accompanied by a paralleled decrease in public administration, education and agriculture. In terms of the financial and business services sector, between 1998 and 2008 it has seen the most significant increase in jobs compared to any other sector in the North Yorkshire, and this growth seems set to continue; these sectors contribute £3,323 million to the local economy, accounting for a quarter of the total York and North Yorkshire GVA. Banking, finance and insurance alone now employ approximately 58,000 people in North Yorkshire. Bradford shares this high concentration of financial institutions, making the sub-region a financial and business hub. Investment and the creative industries The South Yorkshire Sector Growth Enhancement Programme is focussed on investing in and developing areas such as advanced manufacturing, business services, logistics and creative and digital industries. The aim of the programme is to encourage private sector growth in the sub-region through supporting SMEs (small and medium businesses); this being key to growth in South Yorkshire, it will run for four years and could bring in a possible 600 new jobs, generating an increase in GVA in the sub-region of over £9 million. The Creative and Digital Industries employ approximately 113,000 people within Yorkshire and Humber, the fastest growing region for these sectors between 1998 and 2008, with 16% growth. The Yorkshire Content Fund – at a sum of £15 million – will support the further growth of these industries – especially film, TV, games and the digital sector and is forecast to create hundreds of jobs. www.jobsandcareersmag.com 15 http://www.jobsandcareersmag.com
