FOCUS : SALES HOW TO PREPARE Most sales recruiters will be looking for evidence that you are committed to embarking on a career in sales, so you need to demonstrate enthusiasm. SHADOW A REP Approach people you know or contact local companies and ask if you can spend a day or two 'shadowing' someone currently doing the job you want. Offer to buy them lunch. Most Sales Reps will be pleased to have company and delighted with a free lunch! Many companies offer a 'bounty' to employees who find new candidates for sales jobs, so shadowing could represent both an opportunity for the rep to earn some extra money and for you to get a job more quickly than you thought! DO SOME SALES Try sales work in a shop or pub. Even if it's volunteering, the experience will be invaluable. It's also possible to gain part-time work with companies selling over the telephone directly to homeowners. Cold calling isn't for everyone - you'll need a thick skin, and it's often commission-only work, but it's easy to get in and the training is often excellent. Sometimes it can be boring and repetitive, but on the other hand, there is scope to earn some good money. LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN Read books and blogs about sales, and sign up to successful Twitter and Instagram accounts. Also, talk to people you know who are involved in sales. Recruiters like to hear you have a good understanding of what to expect - and the fact that you have done your research will demonstrate to them how enthusiastic you are.
