ADVANCED LEARNING PRACTITIONER
'I began studying mathematics with the
Open University and have so far achieved
a Level-4 certificate. Since being involved
in training Air Cadets, I knew teaching
was the career I wanted to do but did
not realise I would be suitable for it prior
to obtaining a degree. Over the coming
six months I want to gain an in-depth
knowledge of the college and obtain the
skills to teach any maths class given to
me. Students mostly look at maths with
disdain and it is my goal to become the
lecturer that makes maths exciting!
'Today, as our training at Canterbury's
Teaching Academy draws to a close,
I feel that I could not have been better
prepared for the career of education that
lies before me. It's demonstrated that
learning does not have to be strict and
that boundaries can be pushed in order
for the students to enjoy their time in
education. In my short time at the college
I've been able to experience more than I
could have imagined - from involvement
in enrichment week and helping with the
staff conference to facing my fears while
holding a tarantula, and even going to
Amsterdam with the Student Union!
'I could not envisage another job that
provides the same opportunities. Like any
job, though, there are difficulties to be
faced - but with the encouragement and
guidance I've received, I have overcome
them and been able to move forward.
'I am sad that my time at the Teaching
Academy is coming to an end but thankful
to everyone who has been involved as
without them, none of us would be as
equipped as we are to enjoy a long career.'

deliver some teaching but without the
full lecturer responsibility.
