NEW CAREERS the feedback I got from my interview was that they felt I had the emotional warmth and intelligence needed for the job. How did you feel on your fi rst day? Nervous but excited! I felt instantly scooped up and part of the team - it almost didn't feel like work! What do you love most about your new career? Not being behind a desk. No two days are ever the same and I'm doing something so rewarding - giving children vital life skills. It has felt amazing to start something new at 50. It's made me feel " alive " again. What have been the highlights? We held a mini Glastonbury-type festival for the children, with teepees, face painting, bunting and the most amazing silent disco. Everyone was singing and dancing to Abba with smiles on their faces - it was priceless. What has proved to be most challenging about the role? Physically, it can be tough. I sat on my backside for 25 years and now I don't sit still for a second! Have you been able to transfer any skills from your old job? Defi nitely. Communication is key to both roles - and praising and encouraging the rest of the team. All too often we forget our value. How does it compare to your old role? They are poles apart but that's what has felt so refreshing.
