E D UCAT I O N "I have experienced so much of the world" Mark Taylor is a lecturer in carpentry at Sheppey College, part of Canterbury College I worked as a carpenter from 16, serving my apprenticeship in Chester and then moving to London. An agency found me work building sets for films and TV, and I then worked in Canada for almost 10 years building homes and working for Ikea. I moved back to the UK at 42 as I felt that I needed a change in my life. I saw a job in my local paper asking for a carpenter to work on a project teaching disengaged young people who were excluded from education or just released from young offenders' institutes, no teaching experience needed! I learned so much working and found it extremely rewarding. After three years, I started working for my local FE college as a part-time tutor teaching carpentry and joinery. I did a PCGE course, which I was nervous about, but I had a fantastic tutor who was so supportive. In my role now I feel I'm making a difference and possibly changing people's lives for the better. Carpentry has allowed me to experience so much of the world, more so than I had ever dreamed of growing up in Chester. JOBS & CAREERS /// 139
