T

he UK's further
and higher
education sector
is big business,
with 120,000
people employed
full-time in further education
alone. Universities employ almost
207,000 academic staff, as well as
nearly 213,000 non-academic staff.

Further education

For school leavers, further education
provides a continuity to their studies
and helps them to develop skills and
career opportunities. There are 2.2

million further education students
in the UK, 1.4 million of whom
are adults. Studies take place in
sixth-form colleges as well as further
education colleges, where students
can study for A-levels, foundation
degrees, HNDs and HNCs, and
undertake apprenticeships.

Before I started my job in the
engineering department at
North Warwickshire and South
Leicestershire College, I worked as
a registered electrician. I managed
my own company, meeting the
needs of the local community.
I'm still a registered electrician,
but I decided to translate my
industry knowledge and life
skills to assist a new generation
of potential electricians, helping
them begin their learning
journey towards a successful
electrical installation career.
I prepared for my new role by
studying the Preparing to Teach
in the Lifelong Learning Sector
programme at North Warwickshire
and South Leicestershire College.
After securing a position with the
electrical department, I took a
diploma in education and training
at the college, in conjunction
with the University of Warwick,
which comprised assignments,
peer mentoring and observations
to develop my classroom skills.
There are always challenges,
including the time pressures that
can stretch the students because
there is a great deal to get
through within a limited period.
But helping students to complete
their training and get started in
their careers is highly rewarding.
