What skills and qualifications do I need? You usually don't
need to be a graduate but relevant qualifications at HND
or NVQ level may be helpful - you can study subjects like
photography and digital media. You'll almost certainly need
a high level of skill in Adobe applications like Photoshop and
Illustrator, but you'll often receive training on the job.
How much can I earn? Expect to start on between £14,000
and £18,000; experienced specialists can earn £35,000.

Clinical photographer
Working with doctors, clinical photographers produce images
and videos for use in medical care, education and research. They
might take photos in wards or record surgical procedures, and are
usually required to edit images to create teaching materials.
What skills and qualifications do I need? A degree in photography
is normally required, and you'll receive
training in the relevant techniques and

"I joined DSTL (previously known as
DERA) in 1989 as assistant scientific
officer. My passion at the time was
programming and I was looking for a
job in an area where I could learn and
make a difference, rather than a profit.
"I have gained various qualifications over
the years, most recently a BSc in maths
and stats, all through distance learning or
day release. I've also completed submarine
escape training and air survival training!
"I have held a number of positions
at DSTL, including scientific officer,
project manager and now team leader.
DSTL actively encourages continuous
professional development. I am
currently the team leader of the radar
applied research team in the cyber and
information systems division. I lead 13
engineers, scientists and mathematicians,
ensuring they have enjoyable and
challenging work, helping develop their
capability and providing pastoral care.
"The biggest challenge is helping to
develop different people, all of whom
have diverse backgrounds and individual
styles, but it's also very rewarding. I
love working with my colleagues and
also getting to know them individually.
Oddly, Covid-19 has helped with this -
engaging via a video call can really give
a window into a person's life outside
of work, and the current situation
really has brought us all together."
