Kevin Sakumoto, 27, Structural Engineer, Hawaiian Airlines, Honolulu, HI

W

hen asked what made him join the aviation industry as
a structural engineer for Hawaiian Airlines, this is what
Kevin Sakumoto will tell you:
"I've always enjoyed traveling and developed an appreciation
for airplanes and air travel from a young age. I like that the aviation industry makes the world a smaller place and gives people
the means to travel anywhere in the world in a relatively short
amount of time. That combined with all the engineering that
goes into making aircrafts functional and flyable made it an
intriguing industry for me."
As a structural engineer, Sakumoto's job consists of supporting
base maintenance activities by evaluating damages and developing
repairs for structural defects found during routine heavy checks
on B717-200 aircraft. Additionally, his group is responsible for
supporting line maintenance and AOGs at all hours of the day
for B717-200 and A321neo aircrafts if and when structural defects
are found on the line, such as ground damage or bird strikes, to
ensure a timely return to service. They are also tasked to review
and evaluate maintenance documents such as Airworthiness
Directives or Service Bulletins that are issued by the OEMs or
the FAA. Sakumoto also works on other ongoing structuresrelated projects such as assessing corrosion trends and review
of structural repair records for lease returns.

Sakumoto received his B.S. in Mechanical
Engineering from the University of Southern
California. Since beginning his career, he's
also attended various structural repair related training courses offered by Airbus and
Boeing, as well as a few composite related
courses through Abaris.
"I think it's an exciting time to be an engineer in the aviation industry, especially with
so many new technologies emerging and being developed. I
thoroughly enjoy working in this industry and hope to be in it
for a long time. I would like to continue to build on my current
experience and further my education in this field. While I do
not have specific roles or titles in mind, I do hope that one day
I will be able to look back and say that I have made a lasting
contribution to the industry in one way or another, and in a
similar fashion, I hope to be in a position where I can have a
positive impact on other people's careers and lives.
"Having come in as a new grad several years ago, I know that
there can be an overwhelming amount of things to learn when
you first start. I try to give back by teaching the new hires in our
group what I know, and try my best to make sure their transition
into their role is as smooth as possible," said Sakumoto.

Carlos Orrego, 39, Maintenance Service Manager, Banyan Air Service, Fort Lauderdale, FL

C

arlos Orrego's aviation aspirations took flight with a rocket
as a boy.
"My father took me to see a space shuttle launch when I
was a young boy and ever since I saw that beautiful machine
take flight, I knew my heart belonged to the aviation industry,"
recounts Orrego.
In adulthood, his aviation career began with a maintenance
apprenticeship at a flight-school at Miami's Opa-Locka Executive
Airport. From there, Orrego landed what he considered at the
time his dream job - working for American Airlines at Miami
International Airport. Orrego worked for two years at American
Airlines when the events of 9/11 happened.
"Things quickly came to a standstill in my life as I was one of
hundreds of employees who were laid off as a result. I bounced
around maintenance facilities for a few years never truly feeling
like I had a real home in Aviation. I ended up working at one
of the oldest airlines in the world called Chalks Ocean Airways
in FL. My passion for aviation came back here as the job was
very exciting and fast paced. I loved working on the Grumman
Mallards and always loved the thrill of flying in those magnificent
old birds," Orrego said. "I spent just over a year there."
Chalks, though, would go on to shut its doors shortly after
Orrego came onboard, leading Orrego to apply to what has

become his "aviation home" - Banyan Air
Service at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.
"I stared at Banyan as a technician and
quickly climbed through the ranks. I spent
seven years on the floor working on many
different types of airframes rapidly gaining
experience on so many aircraft to include:
King Airs, Citations, Hawkers, Beechjets,
Pilatus, Falcons, Challengers, Lears and
many more. A positioned opened up for a turbine maintenance
service manager which I applied for and did end up getting.
I have been working as one of our service managers in the
maintenance department since then. In March 2020 I will have
been working here for a total of 14 years," Orrego described.
And Orrego's work ethic extends beyond the walls of Banyan
Air. He's a member of NBAA and SFBAA, attends as many
conferences as he can, studied aircraft maintenance at Broward
College - all helping him to excel at Banyan Air.
"This is by far the most challenging and yet rewarding position
I have ever had in my life and wouldn't trade it for anything.
I can truly say I am passionate about my career and am so
grateful for how I have been blessed throughout my journey,"
Orrego reflects.
