Mohammad Yoosof, 39, Airbus Type Instructor, Qatar Airways, Doha, Qatar

F

or Mohammad Yoosof, aviation started out as a hobby. He used
to collect model aircraft and dreamed of being an airman one
day. "When I joined engineering, I wanted to know the concept
of aviation, especially aerodynamics, power plant and avionics
systems," Yoosof said.
Yoosof started his career as an assistant professor before becoming an aircraft maintenance engineer working on the line and base
maintenance on Airbus A320, A330 and A340 series. "I enjoyed
troubleshooting, especially unusual defects," Yoosof said. Currently,
he is an instructor teaching aircraft type training theoretical and
practical training including the use of synthetic training devices
on Airbus A320, A330 and A350 series. "I am also specialized in
teaching legislation, special operations, EWIS and other general
training," Yoosof continued.
"I have completed full type training on Airbus A320, A330, A340
and A350 aircraft series and differences in powerplant," Yoosof
said. "I have also completed specialized courses in instructional
techniques using synthetic training devices." He has also completed
courses in quality management, internal audit, ISO 9001 and aviation management, among others.
Yoosof tries to encourage his engineers to think deeply about certain aspects of the aviation industry. "Due to my multilateral experience in [the] aviation industry including engineering development,

maintenance, fleet management and training, I try to deliver my training not just to
pass examinations, but to engage engineers
in deep explanations and concepts," he said.
"I sometimes trick my trainees to check their
reaction to specific problems," he continued.
"I used to be the instructor assigned
to teach engineers from major airlines,
e.g. British Airways, KLM, South African,
Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, etc.," Yoosof said. "Airbus senior personnel who attended different instructional presentations on Airbus
A330 and A350 were proud of the way ... I teach and they admitted
that they actually learned from me one of the best techniques of
visualization and simplifying of the subject matter ... " he continued.
In the future, Yoosof's goals include becoming a better trainer
than he is today. "My goals are to continue maintaining standards
and quality of training, to monitor ... the continued changes in the
aviation industry and to enhance my knowledge, skills and attitude
... the best I can," he said.
Yoosof is part of Engineers Australia in the Middle East. He noted
that he has initiated the first technical talks within the organization. He received a lot of appreciation and requests for more talks
and conferences involving aviation professionals in the Middle East.

Shawn Patrick, 26, A&P and CFI, Shop Manager, Heritage Aero, Inc., Winnebago, IL

rowing up, Shawn Patrick built and flew remote control airplanes. What started out as a small pastime turned into a lifetime passion.
Though Patrick had always been interested in aviation, it wasn't
until college that he started working in the industry at Heritage
Aero. "I started out simply cleaning airplanes and helping ... while
going to school full time," Patrick said. Now, he is the shop manager
at Heritage Aero. "Along with wrenching on airplanes, I manage the
shop's workload, order parts [and] troubleshoot challenging/technical issues with various aircraft," Patrick remarked. He also does
maintenance test flights in aircraft like the Piper PA-24 Comanche
and North American T-28.
Patrick received his A&P through experience at Heritage Aero
while attending the University of Dubuque Flight Operations program. He graduated in 2017 with a Bachelors of Science in Flight
Operations, a minor in aviation management and a commercial,
multi-engine and instrument rating/certificate. In December 2018,
he attended Baker's School of Aeronautics where he received his
A&P certificate.
Since achieving his A&P and pilot ratings, Patrick passed his
Certified Flight Instructor check ride. When he achieves the
required amount of experience, he plans on getting his Inspection
Authorization certificate. He has also completed other advanced
training such as attending Comanche Pilot Proficiency programs,

a Twin Cessna seminar and various warbird
clinics.
Last year, Patrick received the 20 Under 40
Award presented by the National Warbirds
and Operators Conference (NWOC). He is also
an NAFI and ABS member.
Patrick has had many mentors throughout
his time in the aviation industry: "But two
people stand out as my biggest mentors and
friends," Patrick said. "My CFI, Myron Oakley and my boss and
owner of Heritage Aero Cliff Wileuski."
Patrick's career goals are to continue working for Heritage Aero.
"The airport itself is a wonderful training ground for pilots and
mechanics. Being that it is a small airport and belongs to a small
town, I want to get the community more involved in the airport and
inspire/educate more people in the world of aviation," he stated.
Helping customers at Heritage Aero is extremely important to
Patrick. Whether it is an easy fix or annual inspection to the complicated and very technical issues, Patrick said he enjoys helping
Heritage Aero customers find solutions to their problems.
"I also give back by teaching what I love. With my CFI I now have
the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and passion to others
and introduce new people into the adventurous world of aviation."
