K

risten M. Clonan's career didn't start in
aviation, but her path to the industry has
led her through some special events.
Clonan aspired to be a journalist at a time
when news was going through a major seismic shift.
After a few months in the newsroom,
she yearned for a career behind the
camera but she ended up shifting
her focus to public relations and
marketing, with a focus on event
and experience building.
"I'd love for airports to become
an epicenter for collaboration,"
Clonan said. "I was so impressed
recently when Pittsburgh International Airport
developed a sensory-friendly airport suite, as I
have a passion for supporting those with sensory,
disability, mental health and accessibility needs."
Clonan is a senior consultant with KRW
Consulting and is the former vice president of
corporate communications for Hudson Group.
While at Hudson Group, Clonan constantly
went above and beyond team boundaries to make
things better. Her passion for philanthropy,
community engagement and dedication to help

The workplace is changing, and so are the
demands and demographics of travelers.
In order to be competitive, the aviation
industry needs to focus on building cohesive
customer experience and employee
experience efforts, and understanding the
various touch points along those journeys.
those around her succeed
In 2018, Hudson Group's Corporate
Communications team, led by Clonan, was
tasked with tackling an IPO. The team led
the charge, becoming the lead communication,
speech and presentation architects throughout
the company's transaction period and thereafter,
developing a unified messaging narrative and
brand communications effort that incorporated
four distinct company cultures 220 concessions
contracts and 120 brands.
Under Clonan's leadership, Hudson's corporate
communications team launched the company's
first vendor mobile application and first employee
mobile application. As they built out the corporate

communications plan, the team's vision for a new,
more robust and interactive messaging strategy
came to life with the company's first foray into
mobile applications at the annual vendor show,
bringing more than 1,500 stakeholders together.
She also helped launch the company's first
employer brand campaign, #TogetherWeAreTravel,
and a reinvented employee newsletter reaching
all 10,000 employees.
"It would be great to see more and more
airports taking an 'airport urbanism' approach
to design," Clonan said.

Fun fact about myself: I love tea, and good tea is hard to come
by in airports
Favorite aircraft: A Gulfstream G280
Are you a pilot?: I wish
Someone I look up to in the industry: Christina Cassotis, Space
X's Gwynne Shotwel, and Katharine Wright, the sister of aviation

JOE EMERY Senior Sales Application Engineer, Daifuku Airport Technologies

J

oe Emery started his career in the automotive
division of Jervis B. Webb, but the Great
Recession took him in on a different path.
Emery said he was "loaned" to the airport
division and while there, something
clicked and he really enjoyed the
airport-focused projects.
"Everyday presents a different
challenge. The new challenges can
be frustrating at first, but the reward
of presenting a solution outweighs
any negatives during the process," he
said. "When people ask me about my
position, I like to explain it's the exact
opposite of the Groundhog Day movie. Every day
presents a new challenge and results in a reward to
resolve the open design question."
Emery has been with the company for more
than 12 years. In 2007, he began his career as a
mechanical engineer before reaching his current
position as senior sales application engineer, where
he has made himself a huge asset to the airport
technologies division of Daifuku.
Emery has established himself as a leader known
for always offering a helping hand to his peers and

colleagues. Whenever there is something that needs
extra support, he's the first to offer assistance.
Emery is well-versed in baggage handling
technology, including the use of the mobile
inspection tables (MIT) in CBRA applications,
which provides improved ergonomics and efficiency
for the TSA. He was responsible for the design of
the first MIT system in North America at Detroit
Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).
Emery is incredibly versatile and is often
juggling multiple projects at once. He is an expert
in designing baggage handling systems, where he
contributes conceptual design layouts, reviews
alternates and consistently identifies cost savings
for airline and airport customers.
Additionally, Emery is leading the Baggage Tray
System design for the Daifuku North American
research and development center.
He has spoken as a subject matter expert on
baggage handling innovations at several conferences
including Passenger Terminal Expo and the
International Association of Baggage System
Companies (IABSC).

Alma Mater: Lawrence Technological University, located
in Southfield MI. I'm a member of my Fraternity (SigEp)
Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) and am continuously involved in undergraduate activities, providing
insight and guidance whenever possible. It's great to be
able to assist those looking for guidance with real world
experience and to help identify expectations while still at
the university level.
Fun fact about myself: I was afraid to fly my entire life
until I started at Webb. Now it's a bi-weekly event and I
actually look forward to it.
Favorite aircraft: The newer Airbus A220. It's an amazing
plane layout that considers the passenger experience,
and I expect all newer models to follow a similar design
philosophy
Are you a pilot?: No, and it's not something I'm currently
interested in. I will always give credit to the pilots, though
I don't think I could do what they do
Someone I look up to in the industry: There are so
many that I look up to in the industry, it doesn't seem fair
to identify anyone singularly. I've been fortunate enough
to work with many on projects, and have had the real
honor to work with some more directly. Our industry has
so many knowledgeable, well-spoken individuals that it
would be unfair to only mention a single person. I'm very
appreciative to work with everyone in our industry, and
always looking forward to working with new individuals
