Samsung plans
$116B investment
in non-memory chips
Samsung Electronics Co. has
announced intentions to invest
$116 billion in non-memory
chips for autonomous vehicles
and AI-enabled devices, according to reports by Reuters
and Bloomberg. The move is
likely a challenge to big rivals
TSMC and Qualcomm in mobile processing chips, while
the memory chip market contracts from a longtime boom.
Globally, semiconductor makers are racing to produce chips
to fuel emerging technologies,
such as AI, 5G, and connected
vehicles. U.S. chip supplier
Nvidia, in a similar move,
agreed in March to purchase
Israeli chip designer Mellanox
Technologies Ltd for $6.8 billion, to boost its data center
and AI business.
Samsung said on April 23
that its 133 trillion won ($116
billion) will comprise 73 trillion won for domestic R&D,
and 60 trillion won for production infrastructure. "The
investment plan is expected
to help the company to reach
its goal of becoming the world
leader in not only memory
semiconductors, but also logic
chips by 2030," the company
said in a statement. Samsung's
semiconductor plan comes as
the company strives to shore
its losses from sagging sales
with its smartphone business.

ON Semiconductor
buys GlobalFoundries'
NY 300mm plant;
will invest $720M
ON Sem iconductor a nd
Globa l Fou nd r ies co -a nnounced April 22 that they
have reached an agreement
for ON Semiconductor to
acquire GlobalFoundries'
300mm fabrication facility
in East Fishkill, NY. The total acquisition cost is $430
million, to be paid by the
end of 2022, at which point
ON Semiconductor will gain
full operational control of
the fab and the site's employees will transition to ON
Semiconductor.

ON added that the acquisition provides the company
with a path for high-volume
MOSFET and IGBT turnkey
capacity.
Gov. Cuomo's office release
stated that GlobalFoundries
will be shifting production
from Fab 10 (East Fishkill) to
their other facilities, including Fab 8 in Malta, NY. The
release said that following
the transition period, ON has
committed to hiring a minimum of 950 GlobalFoundries
employees that directly support Fab 10 operations, and
plans to create about 150 new,
well-paying jobs in the MidHudson region.

Rohde & Schwarz
and Helmut Schmidt
University Hamburg
conduct joint research

A press release from New
York Gover nor A nd rew
Cuomo's office said that ON
Semiconductor has committed to invest a total of $720
million in the plant over the
next 10 years as the company
establishes its first 300mm
chip manufacturing plant.
ON's f irst production of
300mm wafers is expected to
start in 2020.
"This provides a world-class,
experienced 300mm manufacturing and development
team to enable conversion
of ON Semiconductor wafer
processes from 200mm to
300mm," ON's press release
stated. "ON Semiconductor
will also have immediate access to advanced CMOS capability including 45nm and
65nm technology nodes."

Rohde & Schwarz subsidiary
ipoque GmbH-a provider
of network analytics solutions for more secure, reliable and efficient networks-
has announced a strategic
research partnership with
Helmut Schmidt University
in Hamburg, Germany to establish a program of exchange
and collaboration. The joint research will focus on artificial
intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics
and runs for four years. The
potential of future technologies to further enhance network analytics and security
solutions will be a main topic
in the partnership.
" This cooperation has
strong benefits for both partners", said Stephan Klokow,
Director DPI at Rohde &

Schwarz. "Cooperating with
leading research institutions
is very important to us as innovation and research are
part of our company's DNA
and the foundation of our
technological leadership. We
will contribute our deep technological expertise, while the
Helmut Schmidt University
offers an environment of innovation. Together we can
translate research into market-leading products."

Keysight's Hattar
