What's so special about
a long haul steer tire?
Interview with Marco Rabe, Continental's head of research and
development for truck and bus tires in the Americas region

Marco Rabe

It seems like steer tires in the long haul
or line haul application frequently have
irregular wear. Why is that?
Rabe: It boils down to two factors: long
distances of straight line driving and
almost entirely on paved, flat surfaces. In
tire development, this is called "minimal
scrub," meaning the tire isn't scrubbing
against the pavement, either by making
those tight turns you see in city driving,
or by driving on something like gravel
or rough roads. The scrub, while it can
damage the tire, can also ease irregular
wear by smoothing things out. With long
haul trucking, there is no chance for that.
Any imperfections are amplified.
What can fleets do to help prevent
irregular wear?
Rabe: The most important thing is air pressure. A tire
with proper inflation delivers 15 percent more life
in original removal mileage, and the casing lasts 20
percent longer for retreading. Those are figures from
the TMC. That's compared to a tire that is just ten
percent underinflated, so running at 100 psi instead
of 110 psi. It can make that much difference.
Also, rotating tires can help, if the irregular wear
is caused by road conditions - for example, many
interstates have a slight slope to help with water
runoff. Fixing mechanical issues is also critical. For
example, when we see lateral wear issues on the
steer tires, it's usually an indication of toe or thrust
wear from either steer axle misalignment or the drive
thrust angle.

Are certain tires more forgiving when it comes to
irregular wear?
Rabe: Continental has put a lot of time and effort
into developing the most forgiving long haul steer
product in the North American market, with the new
Conti EcoPlus HS3+ tire. Does this mean we will no
longer see irregular wear? There are so many factors
affecting tire wear, which means there are always
situations where it may occur. But the tread profile
of the Conti EcoPlus HS3+ is specifically designed
to reduce sensitivity to road surface, fleet, and
vehicle variations. In over 9 months of field tests, it is
delivering up to 27 percent better mileage* than the
predecessor product.

What other factors influence
steer tire performance?
Rabe: Decoupler durability is a big challenge.
Many tires feature a decoupler groove, also called
a defense rib, to help prevent shoulder wear. The
benefits of the decoupler make it almost essential
for long haul steer tires, because it helps distribute
the forces experienced by the tire. But in some
cases, the decoupler rib can tear, which leads to
early removal. Choosing a tire with durability in the
decoupler is essential to get longer tire life.
The Conti EcoPlus HS3+ has a 10 percent
improvement in decoupler durability
compared to its predecessor
product. I believe fleets will be
pleased with the performance of
this new tire.
