The Future of Commercial
Vehicle Diagnostics
Information is knowledge in any business, and knowledge leads to efficient decision making.
In the last 10-plus years, both commercial
vehicle technicians and fleet repair centers
have witnessed many changes in vehicle
diagnostics. While collection of repair data
and information continues, large fleets
and OEMs are now using analytics to assist
technician repair decisions, improving the
likelihood of getting the repair done right
"the first time." Concurrently, OEM dealers have seen changes as they became the
center for vehicle repair knowledge (with
the required diagnostic information now
supplied by the OEM). These changes, along
with the introduction of a number of new
telematics offerings, have brought both
confusion and chaos to the marketplace.
Understanding a vehicle's repair history is
also a challenge for any technician. Vehicle
repair history information should be shared
across the repair network at the dealer, the
aftermarket facility network, and the fleet
repair network.

enable events; authorization for most of
these repair events will be required; and
will likely be limited to trained dealer or
fleet techs.
The industry has attempted to simplify
diagnostics and vehicle repair, but unfortunately has forgotten the technician. To
improve efficiency, tools should assist the
technician in repairing the vehicle. This can
be accomplished by seamlessly presenting
service information to technicians so that
they don't have to search for it. Integrating
service information in diagnostic products
is a continuous improvement effort.

Telematics:
Diagnostics Enabler
The Telematics market continues to consolidate as it seeks to create value for fleets
and OEMs. However, aftermarket repair
groups/organizations have yet to release,
or partner with, a telematics platform.
Telematics platforms produced by the OEM
are available in the marketplace today. For
example, GM's OnStar® offers a remote
diagnostic application within its feature
set, and Daimler Trucks of North America
and Virtual Technicianâ„¢ are also available.
Note that the telematics platform, although
potentially fully capable as a diagnostic tool,
is still used as an ancillary or complimentary product to the OEM-produced diagnostic tool. In time, however, the market will
dictate when telematics will become more
capable from a diagnostics standpoint. The
capability is there, but the software has yet
to be developed.

Looking Forward

Current conflicts between OEM and
aftermarket repair facilities will not
change, despite the Service Information

Requirements Act. OEM dealers will always
have access to software, training, and
special service tools that are unavailable to
the aftermarket facility. In most cases, that
also will not change. We never indicate the
"fairness" in this because life is not fair. The
EPA's Service Information Requirements
Act covers emissions-related data and
special service tools to accomplish repair
of emissions-related systems. But the
number of controllers available on the
network far exceeds the emissions aspect
of engine management (excluding transmission, brakes, and chassis items). Similar
to the automotive industry, however, the
OEMs have a plan. Software tools will

What's Next?

This environment is complex; and it's not
getting any easier. The gap between the
technician skillset and product features
should be balanced. New product development, innovation, and on-going technical
support are the challenges as the market
transitions toward a more technicianbased toolset. The underlying requirement
for new products must be an efficient
architecture that enables platform variety,
and one that provides more efficient use
by technicians of varying skillsets. New
software must be more specific for tasks
such as preventive maintenance, reprogramming, and diagnostics (all available on
a variety of platforms).
